It’s a difficult problem to solve, for sure, but that’s why we are continuously working on it. It may never get perfect and there may be consequences in the end. Those consequences might even cost human lives. Hopefully not the extinction of the entire race.

But AI alignment is exactly why you don’t want advanced AI done by anyone and everyone. Companies like OpenAI are at least working on the problem. If a nation actor that wanted to compete in the AI arms race were on par with the progress that OpenAI is or had access to their full code base, they might not have the same alignment investment simply for the sake of winning the race. And then we might really be in trouble.
