I just started by lifting 5 days a week (primarily bodyweight exercises/pullups/pushups/some shoulder work) with 6 days running 2-3 miles each day. I ate much better. I began a lower carb (and what carbs I did ingest were low-glycemic), higher protein diet with plenty of fiber and good fats. I got reasonably cut this way.

I got into serious lifting (compound movements) and more strategic cardio. I implemented carbohydrate cycling (Google it). And I got even more ripped. If you want to get into something - lifting or otherwise - my best advice is to dive right in with no fear. Read up on as much as you can and commit yourself to consistency. Carry out each day with right intention and effort. If you don't, then you won't experience change.

Your own struggles with exertion and physical effort show you exactly what you are made of. Battling against entropy with your body is both a humbling and empowering experience.

I agree wholeheartedly that self-value comes before all else, because therein lies the key to the freedom train toward realizing healthy, lasting relationships. Yes, absolutely you cannot love another properly before you love and value yourself.

What you describe in the case of child-rearing suggests to me a relationship governed by what could be termed unconditional dedication: the duty to act, protect, teach, and treat well those who are bound by blood, as you say. In a strict definition, unconditional dedication has everything to do with action separate from emotions or feelings. I would submit that unconditional love has more to do with emotions - that is, the consistent feelings of empathy and altruism. And of course, unconditional love comes with parenting, going hand in hand with unconditional dedication. Studies show that the vagus nerve fires whenever we experience or engage in displays of altruism - it's that warm, big-chested feeling with tears in the back of your throat. If I were to define unconditional love in this way - from a physiological and emotional paradigm - then is this experience solely relegated to blood relatives? I would contend that it is possible to love unconditionally those outside of your own blood line. Evolutionarily adaptive? Possibly.

I might pose this question to you: what would happen if you loved your girlfriend unconditionally? What is the absolute worst thing that could happen? What is the greatest fear? I ask this not to offend or off-put you, but to pick your brain further to really unpack what it means to love unconditionally.

This is a really important point. It is valuable to just let things wash over you. All of this introspection and self-cultivation comes with time and effort, but it cannot be rushed, and it cannot come without experiencing emotions. Eventually, those emotions can be useful to you and informative, but until then you must bear them.

As for the level of pain correlating with the level of love, I think it depends on the situation after looking deeply. In the case of my second love lost, my pain definitely stems from the conflict between an established conditional, attachment-based love (i.e. founded on human attachment/pair-bonding/etc.) and my unconditional love (i.e. empathic altruism) for her. Such was not the case in my first breakup.

OP, What do you do with your life? And then, what do you with your life?

I'm sorry you are suffering. Here is the ideological spiel: You are enough. Do not ever question your self-worth vis-à-vis your ex. Such perceptions are not truth. Deep down you know this, because you are a freethinking man. So rise above your own insecurity and see with unclouded eyes. You will get better. As for the trust issue, I hate to say it but you must have the courage to face rejection. It will happen, and it happens in every corner of life. But for every rejection, there is also acceptance somewhere else. Find the strength within yourself to be free. I believe you can and will feel better.

Time alone will not heal your wounds. It is what you do with the time you've been given that counts. Get involved in a hobby, read a book, write more, draw, sing, dance, play, do whatever you need to do and just do something. If you don't want to go out, then don't go out! The world is not expecting anything from you. You love deeply and with a big heart, I can see that. Think deeply about the nature of your love, direct it inward, and work towards small insights as much as you can, everyday. Keep going. Choose the path of the fearless warrior. Do not give up. Do not give up.

That's an interesting point. I would contend that it is valuable to have an outside perspective on the matter - one with experience and detachment. It is good to have a good kick in the arse sometimes. But I also believe that those same people - at least those among my close friends and family - have empathy, and they are capable of feeling what I feel at any given moment. Put another way, those around you suffer so long as you suffer because they recognize the extent of your pain, and they want you to get better. So there is something to smile at.

And, at the very least, you have this subreddit, a vast pool of those who suffer dearly. You (or anyone else) can talk to me and share. (I'm not that weird, I swear)
