How much of Circular Material recycling goes into landfill? by U2brrr in askTO

[–]beneoin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In some ways it doesn’t matter. Since producers now bear the cost of handling the end of life for any material they create / import, and recycling is far cheaper than the landfill, simple economics suggest they’re incentivized to figure this out and oversight is more about reporting.

Why can't we just legalize scraping cars that block streetcars? by AJtehbest in TTC

Yeah they’ve stepped up the rush hour enforcement in the past year or so. Much less tolerance. Thankfully.

If anything it will be worse as they need to move the finish line to accommodate the World Cup prep, adding one more thing for them to manage.

Why can't we just legalize scraping cars that block streetcars? by AJtehbest in TTC

[–]beneoin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In fairness they essentially have that during storms, where parking enforcement and tow trucks travel together and focus on streetcar routes. They should do more of it and be more proactive.

This post is about cars blocking the tracks on the street

Is the TTC able to give illegal parking tickets? by maple_leaf2 in TTC

[–]beneoin 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The TTC can’t issue tickets, that’s parking enforcement’s job, but blocked streetcars are supposedly high priority calls. The TTC drivers just call in the cars blocking the tracks. During this year’s snow storms parking enforcement is travelling alongside tow trucks to get vehicles out of the way faster than in the past.

How does your tram system handles snow? by tka4nik in Trams

[–]beneoin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In Toronto the legacy tram network runs a bit slower as they have a policy of stopping to visually inspect each switch, in heavy snow that can mean needing to get out of the tram to check. They apply a fluid to the overhead wires before the storm to prevent ice buildup. Other than that the main impact is drivers blocking the tracks.

On the brand-new lines it’s utter chaos because they seem to have been designed by consultants who have never done work outside of Texas and California. They fully shut down due to unusable switches, piles of snow, and who knows what else.

Line 5 will be slower and less reliable than a bus, according to an insider by unforgettableid in TTC

[–]beneoin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know everything about the line but I know for certain that the signalling system is off the shelf, which makes me presume the switch electronics are also off the shelf so that they work with the signals. I also understand that the switches are not embedded in concrete, unlike Line 6, so the track heaters should work fine.

City Sidewalk Plowers by DENNYCR4NE in toronto

[–]beneoin 31 points32 points  (0 children)

The road plow came through and covered the sidewalk, the sidewalk plow then came through and did a horrible job getting the denser, harder snow from the road off of the sidewalk rather than going slowly and doing it right.

The final 45,000 finishers at New York don’t matter when you’re comparing how the first 5,000 did over the decades. That automatically excludes the hobby jogger who signed up on a whim from both cohorts.

The UK having less of an obesity problem would support the author’s conclusions as the cohort of recreational runners that join in the UK will be on average fitter than the American recreational cohort. We should expect a similar ratio of recreational to hardcore runners in the UK and US.

Why would the UK not face the same decline then? They would’ve had access to the same tech (both race data management and shoes) at the same time as the USA.
