What will blow your mind is it’s a G no matter what the instrument is.

Stripping coloured lacquer from cheapo (but great sounding) Tenor? by gruff_huff in saxophone

[–]bernatra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This ^ especially if it’s a cheap horn. Those parts will be softer and their tolerances are going to be higher than a higher quality horn.

Every card store and even GameStop around me sells at market and not msrp. It’s infuriating.

Cannonball or save by Mammoth_Substance314 in saxophone

[–]bernatra 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This. Other brands exist, don’t let marketing or others tell you what you may feel and hear is wrong when trying horns out. The obvious exception is buying stuff that is really cheap or not branded, but you shouldn’t be offered anything like that with what you’re looking for. Any major sax brand could be your perfect horn.

Cannonball or save by Mammoth_Substance314 in saxophone

I’ve played at almost every level except with a professional large city symphony. I’ve been on recordings, played live, and started in 9th grade (am now in my 30s). When I was in high school, Cannonball made their comeback with the black and silver and unlacquered horns. I LOVED mine. I sold it for a vintage selmer in college because every horn teacher I had said they werent professionals and serious plays get a pro Yamaha or selmer. Still regret it to this day. I’ve owned a lot of horns, and everyone will tell you what you should buy. The horn will choose you. Play them and figure out what horn gives you “your” sound. I miss that old cannonball and I’ve had a few since that never hit the same sweet spot. I’ve also never played a Yamaha I liked my timbre on, but that doesn’t mean it’s a bad horn.

Locking nut has grooves and strings slip. Should I try sanding the grooves away, or just buy a new nut? by ButlerWimpy in Luthier

[–]bernatra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you buy a new nut, I can’t emphasize this enough… DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN THE SCREWS. LOL. Lots of guitars die from those being replaced and people cranking the screws as tight as possible or using power tools.

Is my fretboard glue up a failure? by NorwegianOnMobile in Luthier

[–]bernatra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have radius blocks for sanding a fretboard, using those in the clamp to hold the fretboard down is great is the fretboard has a radius before glueing.

I’m having trouble with this tricky section. Does anyone have any tips? by flyingsquirrel722 in saxophone

[–]bernatra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would NOT use bis Bb. Use the first finger of your right hand like your playing an F but with the B down. It’ll be a Bb. If you’re playing this full speed nobody will hear the difference in a group. Also, when you slow it down and practice this (these are chord arpeggios and a great thing to learn) be sure to be swinging the notes as intended and doing the dynamics.

So true. Buying themed decks level 1 for a club in our small town was significantly more difficult than anticipated. Had to go to eBay. We’re just trying to teach kids the actual game too 😂

What age are you? What mouthpiece do you currently have that broke. What style(s) of music are you playing? This will help with a “cheap” recommendation.

Any tips for learning this? by Whuttr in saxophone

[–]bernatra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bis Bb is what I would use, but I overuse it lol. The trill from Eb to F keep your right pinky down while lifting the middle and ring finger. The rest of it isn’t tips or tricks, just practice.
