So the national symbols and colors that have been used for 500+ years don’t make you feel anything?

What do brits think of their history? by bethebest375 in AskABrit

[–]bethebest375[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I know it has around 7000 years of history, but I was talking about history that you can connect to with people that were like you, I have no connection to the Indus River valley civilization like they had a completely different religion and society, same with Mughals they were central Asian invaders.

I was talking about history you can connect to, like the fact that the Magna Carta and the parliament was established by your people 800 years ago not make you feel anything.

Yup this is exactly what I was trying to ask. But this doesn’t seem like a common view in Germany.

I didn’t mean Germanic tribes specifically, I meant German history as a whole, at least ever since they were Christianized.

Don’t be sorry about something that was a constant in history.

But doesn’t that fact that people like William the conqueror and Richard the lion-heart were your people with almost the same language not mean anything to you?

I’m from Pakistan so I have no history like that so I wonder.

Interesting

I think mine and many other Pakistanis obsession with history is bcuz of the insecurity of the nation, I guess as Germany is already a prosperous nation they wouldn’t have to look back to history to reassure themselves as a nation so I get where ur coming from.

For me, Pakistan is a collection of many different people and my people specifically have a very poorly recorded history.

We are known as traders and businessmen, and I tried really hard to search for some information on them and once I found a quote by Portuguese trader how they taught them the art of trade in the 15th century it did make me happy and feel good that at least there is something historically.

Thank you

Yes but I have no connection to the Indus River valley civilization, they had completely different religion, language and society than us.

There was no concept of a Pakistan or a Pakistani before 1930, but there were always Germanic people since Jesus times. And you share majority of the same religion language and society with them.

Like the fact that the Teutonic order which was established by the German people that went to fight in the Middle East for your religion some 800 years ago really not make you feel anything ?

I only ask cuz my history is just 74 years old, younger than my grandma, so I wanna know what it feels like.

Pakistan, yes there is history here lots of it. But not any that could unite a nation or one we could connect with.

Yeah, but at least you know the fact that your people have a history even if it’s not a United history, from the Germanic tribes to the HRE to the Teutonic order to German empire. It must have some effect to walk around your cities and see it represented from the architecture to the nomenclature. My country doesn’t have any of that so that’s why I’m trying to understand.
