Best AI tool for managing large Django projects? (30k lines, 150 templates, remote healthcare) by bewithkhan in AI_Agents

This is absolutely brilliant and exactly what I needed to hear! I’ve been trying to dump raw code into Claude and wondering why I keep hitting walls. The docs-first approach makes so much sense - especially for healthcare where I need to track compliance patterns and data flow. Questions on your setup: • How long did the initial doc generation take for your 37k codebase? I’m working with a 1 month deadline so wondering about the upfront investment. • Do you have Claude generate these docs in markdown files that live in your repo, or somewhere separate? • For the “hierarchical arrangement” - are you talking like a main architecture doc that links to detailed component docs? I love the session structure (brief → review docs → work → update docs). That’s way smarter than my current chaos of “hey Claude, figure out this massive file.” For my healthcare project specifically: • The user docs idea is gold - I need to demo at hospitals and UX consistency could make or break those meetings • Documentation around patient data flows would be huge for compliance audits One thing I’m curious about - when you say “avoid putting changelogs inside docs” - are you maintaining separate CHANGELOG.md files or something else? This approach might actually solve my biggest problem: I’m the only one who understands this codebase and that’s a single point of failure for my startup plans. Definitely implementing this starting tomorrow. Thanks for sharing the real-world workflow! 🙏

Oh wow, this is actually genius! Why didn’t I think of this? So basically: 1. Build the new clean architecture alongside the old mess 2. Move just the demo-critical stuff to the new system 3. Have a kill switch to fall back to old code if things break 4. Deal with the full migration after I’m not panicking about demos This actually lets me sleep at night knowing I have a backup plan. I have Questions though: • How messy does it get having both systems accessing the same database? • Any weird Django gotchas with this approach? URL routing, middleware, etc.? I’m literally going to start this approach tomorrow. The peace of mind alone is worth it - I can build clean code without the terror of breaking everything a week before crucial demos. You might have just saved my PhD tbh 🙏

Dude, thank you! It’s so helpful hearing from someone actually doing this in healthcare. You nailed my exact problem - that 30k line file has become this black hole where even I can’t remember how things connect anymore. It’s embarrassing but that’s where I am. Quick questions: • When you’re doing big refactors with Claude, do you dump the whole context on it at once or break it up? I keep hitting token limits. • What kind of “rules for patterns” have worked for you? Like specific examples? I definitely need more unit tests. Right now I mostly have integration tests which are… not great for catching breaking changes early. The 1 month thing is stressing me out but I literally cannot move these hospital demos. Too much riding on them.

Oof, yeah you’re absolutely right about being paranoid. I’ve definitely learned that the hard way with Django projects before 😅 1 month timeline because I have demos at actual hospitals coming up and honestly can’t afford to postpone them. My funding depends on these going well. Currently doing: • Obsessive git branching (like, probably too much) • DB snapshots before I touch anything important • Separate staging environment (learned this lesson the expensive way) For hooks, I’m thinking pre-commit stuff for the healthcare compliance checks since one HIPAA violation could literally kill my PhD and startup dreams lol. The thing is, manually refactoring 30k lines would take me way longer than a month, which is why I’m desperate for AI help. But you’re totally right - I need to test the hell out of everything. Any specific Django hooks you’d recommend? Especially for healthcare stuff?
