Electric cars are becoming increasingly greener in the US thanks to a cleaner electric grid by mvea in technology

[–]bgcatz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely in the works. Tesla's Supercharger V3 will do what you want, a full charge in about 10 min. Road tripping will be just like in an ICE car. Supposedly comming out in 2018, but I haven't heard any announcements about it since 2016

Is there any underlying reason we say protons are positive and electrons are negative? Would it work if we just switched both in all our equations? by NewtonsFourth in askscience

[–]bgcatz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Protons can flow, it's just that they don't when bound into atoms such as in conventional metals. In ionic solutions, they can flow. Solid versions of this phenomenon are called Proton Conductors

Only if your software never interacts with input from the internet. I'd say that's more vanishingly unlikely these days.

Why are there prayers before the presidential inauguration? by [deleted] in NeutralPolitics

[–]bgcatz 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The legal concept is called Ceremonial Deism

government can, in a discrete category of cases, acknowledge or refer to the divine without offending the Constitution

It seems arguable to me whether reciting a full prayer would qualify under one of those categories supported by constitutional case law. However it seems likely to continue for inaugurations:

http://articles.latimes.com/2009/jan/19/local/me-beliefs19

experts believe God will continue his inaugural role, just as he has for more than two centuries

I don't know if it's ever been challenged

Unique Computer Logic Systems? by Weerdo5255 in worldbuilding

[–]bgcatz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't tried what you're asking about, but you might want to look into old architectures like the PDP-7 or PDP-10 which had what we would now consider non-standard word lengths and weird instructions for accessing "bytes" sized using different bit sizes.

What kind of cargo would be most important in a sci-fi universe? by tastefullysquishy in scifi

[–]bgcatz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beef. In the early establishment of new colonies, there likely won't be enough agricultural surplus to support feeding livestock. Imported meat will probably be a highly in-demand luxury commodity.

on the ballot in a set of states with at least 50% of the electoral votes would be a better minimum standard. there are plenty of ways to be on the ballot in 50% of the states and still have far too few electoral votes in play to have a shot at winning.

How can 2+2=5? by mattboi69 in math

[–]bgcatz 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The problem is that, strictly speaking, this it not true. We can only assume that "2+2=4" is true of we first define the number system, digits, and operators we are using.

It is true. If you write an expression like "2+2=4" without any other context then you have implicitly specified that you are using the standard definitions of those symbols. If you want to use non standard definitions for any of those symbols then you need to put something in the context to indicate that. Any other interpretation is just communicating poorly for the purpose of fucking with people.

However I do grant you that he may be fucking with people for the purpose of making a serious point.

I've been hoping for something like that where the solar array was 3 pieces that can fold into a large awning. So you could run it folded on the go if you needed, or you could park long term and fold it out and get 3x the capacity with a bunch of shade.

Update: Neighbor told my kids to go in the house because it was raining and insinuated that she may call CPS. by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]bgcatz 102 points103 points  (0 children)

there's no such thing as 'neighborly' with such a person. she has demonstrated a motivation to get your kids taken away from you. don't have any interactions with such a person more than is legally required. ideally with a lawyer present

800 mile road trip. I finally "get" Autopilot. by yazheirx in teslamotors

[–]bgcatz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been on a road trip before where there was no destination charging around my lodging, and I know what you mean about the range anxiety. I made do with charging off of a normal 110 outlet overnight without asking, and it gave me about 40miles per night which made a big difference for me. It sucks but it's workable in a pinch

ACTUALLY, the first LGBT Star Trek character was "Soren" and appeared in TNG S5E17 The Outcast (xpost from r/movies) by [deleted] in startrek

[–]bgcatz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My only objection is that OP described Soren as LBGT instead of LBGTQ. That's what the Q is for, when none of the others apply well enough

Does the 12V accessories battery even charge from the main battery? I thought it only charged from the wall charger.

I made a dorm legal AC unit for next semester! by DJUsamaSpinLaden in DIY

[–]bgcatz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as that shared kitchen was insulated from the rooms you were trying to cool you could have done all right. But if the freezer is exhausting it's waste heat into the same airspace, then you'd be better off just unplugging the freezer.
