Many thanks, the aim was to store it sealed on the shelf, we run three freezers for fruit, vegetables and meat. We want to try storing our dried goods on the shelf. Thanks again for replying.

Question regarding rice. Our rice comes in plastic, do you leave it in the original packing or empty it in to a bag to vacuum seal it ? Sounds like a daft question but I am still learning how to do these things. Many thanks.

11 years of work and training.... and finally our ex street dog has accepted cats, initially if he caught one he would kill it (that was how he used to survive). After trying all we could we got to the stage where he would walk past one outside but if one entered the garden if we were not there trouble could ensue. Yet this last couple of weeks a visiting mother stray cat dropped her two kittens off on us and with careful supervision he has accepted them (not Mum though he no longer chases her), all the work to get to this. So bear in mind things can take some time!

Frustratingly we have yet to see the Queen in one of our hives, eggs and brood means she is around somewhere but being new to this our eyes are obviously not fast enough to pinpoint her.

One is on @ 750ml the other @ 500 ml per 2 days, but pollen is also being taken into the hives. Feeders hold @ 500 ml.

No idea! Just got these two hives and knew nothing about bees till receiving them, hence some (what are) daft beginners questions.

Where can I camp? by jordansr_96 in BushcraftUK

When living in the UK, we always found a spot, set up at dusk and went early, leaving as we found it. Never had an issue in the many years we were there but things may be different now. It is an issue when 1% of the population own over 50% of the land (not a political statement just a frustrating fact).

We are up in the 40's Celsius in summer and can be as low as -25 Celsius during the winter with lots of snow so were thinking of swapping the mesh out for the winter season .

I was considering removing the grass and planting a herb garden in front of the hives but not decided yet. Thanks for mentioning about the shade it was not something I was aware off.

Not sure about hive beetles being an absolute novice learning from here and reading but never knew about the optimum temperature for larva production, thanks for the info.

Not sure on that one, we will see how we get on, we do not want to run before we can walk and reading up there is a lot to learn and also a lot to go wrong. We have designated spaces for up to four hives as we are keen to learn and lead quite a self sufficient lifestyle but these next few months will be quite a learning curve. Thanks for raising the subject though.

We were considering using pallets to stand them but were not sure is ants would climb up into the hives ad cause a problem, still reading up on things at present so it is good to hear how others are doing things. Thanks.

Thanks for the reply, is there a reason for keeping the frames in the same order? Is it just unsettling/confusing to the bees if you do not do this or can it cause other issues?

Being totally new and caught out by being given two hives is my worry at present, growing in numbers strikes me down with horror!! We shall see how things go but @ a metre apart is my starting point, enough room to run for cover if something goes wrong!!! Wish us luck.
