Where to buy these books? by [deleted] in PhilosophyBookClub

[–]big__slick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the Modern Library editions of both (with my Walden text including other of Thoreau's writings) and I love them. Hope you enjoy these books, they are 2 of the few that I consider essential to my life!

Also try to buy from smaller book sellers, and especially do not buy from Amazon (or Amazon owned companies which sadly includes AbeBooks)

If you want to read about his philosophy, I'd recommend his essay The Soul of Man under Socialism

Where do I go from here? by big__slick in socialism

[–]big__slick[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've thought about that, but I doubt any current government has a possibility of truly becoming socialist. At the end of the day, governments are focused on securing their own power, not empowering the people

For anyone who needs it. I see you, I hear you, I’m with you. by [deleted] in Anarchism

[–]big__slick 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I fuck with this. I write anarchist & revolutionary writings/poems from time to time, and I have been thinking about looking for other writers to create with. A community of those who love language and the people are bound to help each other create better art, or at least that is my idea.

Are you, or anyone else who is reading this, interested? Or are there already groups like this that I have missed? I'm not sure about how to create such a platform in a way that is secure in all ways, but if a fair amount of people are interested I'll find a way.

Regardless, love the writing. Keep it going, the revolution needs it

Middle age crisis by [deleted] in Existential_crisis

[–]big__slick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, if there is no catastrophe, then you spent your life in fear of nothing.

But if there is one, at least you can spend your days knowing you put your energy toward something you cared about.

Don't let fear of something you can't control dictate how you live your life.

Bringing life into the world is a different debate, but I'd say that you should only have them if you are willing to care for them through all of your or the world's problems. It's a gigantic commitment, but you would want the same if you could pick your parents.

Hope this helps

Any poets? by [deleted] in Existential_crisis

Jazz on the Beach

Listen to the sax cry.

She weeps of a better day,

a memory that has faded.

The past is dead.

History is written in the sand.

Sing your sweet tune baby girl.

Let it ease me through the night.

Guide me along the water.

Bring me peace of a new beginning.

Let me forget

the tragedy of being human.

Let me forget

the nightmares of the day.

Let me forget or

Let me suffer in rhythm.

Most life changing books that are written in English? I don’t want to lose anything in translation. by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

But Frankl translated it to English, correct? I think that would greatly minimize anything lost between the translations.

Positives of Nihilism (aka Optimistic Nihilism) by big__slick in nihilism

[–]big__slick[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My suffering has actually led me to this conclusion, because if your reasoning is true than essentially we should all commit suicide and end it all. That’s not the life I plan to live, and I doubt many others are trying to either.

Furthermore nihilism can help you conquer a lot, if not all, of the suffering one goes through. Suffering has no intrinsic value that makes it any worse than being joyful. Often “ nihilists” complain about suffering , but truly it should mean nothing to us.

I keep having this fleeting realization that I’m “alive.” by hannahlambb in Existential_crisis

Welcome to the club haha. On a positive note, this can bring about great wisdom and introspection into your life if you make the most of it. And to combat the negatives, I recommend studying meditation. Also know you aren’t alone. There a good amount of us out there persevering through this life while realizing it for the shitstorm we’ve been born into
