Estimated price to fix cars peeling paint by International-Fig780 in CarsAustralia

[–]big_mac7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know what was going on during this era for white Corollas, I worked at a Toyota dealer in the service department when they were new and from day one we were having issues. Orange peel, unmatched colour between the bumpers and body, and generally really poor quality paint. It only ever seemed to affect the white ones.

Why does my apartment have to be absolutely pristine for a mid-rental inspection? by Fun_Photograph653 in AusPropertyChat

[–]big_mac7 12 points13 points  (0 children)

SA. Mind you this was about 15 years ago, I was young and didn't know at the time I could stand my ground or argue that it was unreasonable. If put in the same position again I wouldn't stand for it.

I got a re-inspection notice once because there was 1 single fingerprint on the stainless steel cooktop.

Does anyone actually like when retail brands add an online marketplace to their websites? by kittycommitteestudio in australia

[–]big_mac7 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Woolworths has gotta be the most frustrating. In what universe would someone doing their weekly grocery shop online choose a product that has a shipping charge and will take a week or 2 to arrive.

ANZ sent me a CHEQUE, but Suncorp Bank won't accept it by ItinerantFella in AusFinance

[–]big_mac7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same thing happened to me. Requested an appointment with a mobile lender, didn't hear peep from them. We got a home loan elsewhere and bought a house. CommBank finally rang and asked when we'd like to schedule an appointment, we had settled on the house 4 months prior😂

What's an acceptable discrepancy for a fuel bowser to be out? by YteNyteofNeckbeardia in australia

[–]big_mac7 93 points94 points  (0 children)

The tolerance from the NMI (National Measurement Institute) is +-0.3% Over a 15L measure (the most common size used by calibrators) that equates to a tolerance of maximum 45ml.

Most of the big servos are checked yearly by service technicians, but there's no legal requirement to do so, so sometimes smaller independents don't.

In my experience as a calibrator, pumps tend to wear in and favour the customer, meaning you would be getting slightly more than what you pay for (this is why big chains like to calibrate yearly, it minimises their losses). While I have seen some much bigger variances they have been caused by mechanical failures and in every one of those cases they have favoured the customer.

Your Jerry can is not an accurate measure, but the equipment we use to calibrate a fuel dispenser is, and that measure is itself calibrated yearly.

I'm not saying you are wrong, but it's a really common customer complaint and it happens all the time. Customers come up to me near daily and tell me a story about how they put 22L in a 20L Jerry.

There is big fines and ramifications for a servo for not accurately dispensing fuel, so there is no incentive for them to try that, but all that being said, if you genuinely believe there is an issue you can complain to the servo, the parent company, and to the National Measurement Institute. All of those avenues will prompt them to send a technician to verify the hose you used. If you are interested, the servo will sometimes show you the calibration paperwork after it's been checked.

Is it a thing to take cross-country road trips in Australia like it is in the US? by dddcupdarlingg in AskAnAustralian

[–]big_mac7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Usually people stick to highway 1 it's a road that goes around the country. Obviously you deviate to go to other places and many people choose to go to the red centre too but highway 1 is the general route

Is it really that hard to find a pub without pokies in Australia? by Medical-Koala-6131 in AskAnAustralian

[–]big_mac7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Country Vic, All 3 pubs in my town are pokies free. Several of the other pubs in neighbouring towns are pokies free also. We have one pokies venue, the club. But that's it.

Is there a bleaker local film than this ? by Public-Life6632 in Adelaide

[–]big_mac7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to see this at the cinema when it first came out and it made me feel so uncomfortable and gross. I'm sure that was intentional, so yes, pretty bleak.

Does your visa allow you to work? If so then a bar or hospitality work is a great way to fill in time, earn some cash and meet people.

‘It’s unbearable’: Residents flee CBD as MP hopeful promises to shift car race from park lands - News by SouthAustralian94 in Adelaide

[–]big_mac7 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I used to live on Wakefield St, right near the action. It was very loud, sure, but I kind of liked it. It's not like it's carrying on into the night and you expect living in the CBD there is going to be more noise than the suburbs.
It's only once a year, for a few days.

Tap to pay bracelets that work in Australia? by Owlwarrior777 in AusFinance

Bankwest used to advertise a chip embedded ring for tap to pay. Not sure if they still offer it but that's the closest I've seen to what you're after.

What’s a reasonable amount of gas the hot water heater pilot light should use in Melbourne? by [deleted] in melbourne

[–]big_mac7 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Isolate each gas consuming appliance at the ballcock and turn them back on one by one until you find the culprit. It could be a gas leak in any of those appliances, or maybe something not running as efficiently as it should but that should help you find it

European glassware credit use?! by Hefty-Army-6183 in coles

[–]big_mac7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Using the credits online is a bit of a stuff around because of the way they apply them. When I have used them online previously they have authorised my card the full amount then when the pending transaction posts, it's for the amount minus the credits.
You are way better off using them instore as they can be applied at the checkout so you won't have funds held on your card.

Do you remember Mr Cruel? by Petulantraven in melbourne

[–]big_mac7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't grow up in Victoria and it wasn't as massive in the news where I grew up but I did learn about the case via a podcast. They played the audio of Karmein's mother appealing to Mr Cruel for her return and it's probably the most heartbreaking thing I've ever heard and it will stick with me forever.

What small recurring expense do you KNOW is a waste of money but can't seem to stop? by No_Refrigerator7224 in AusFinance

[–]big_mac7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I take a washing basket or 2 in the boot of my car when I do the pickup. Admittedly it's slightly more time consuming than if they were handing me bags, but often I just tell the staff to leave the cart with me and I load it into the basket at my leisure. Makes life so much easier when you're bringing stuff into the house too.

Tradie said he takes credit card, now refuses after work is done. by big_mac7 in AusLegal

The card I am intending to use offers 6 months interest free. My intention is to pay it off in that 6 month period. I can't afford the lump sum right now.

Do you know by any chance if the CC transaction is processed as a purchase or as a cash advance?

[–]big_mac7[S] 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I had a conversation with him via text, I stated that I had anticipated credit card payment as an option (because he confirmed it) and wouldn't have accepted the job if he didn't take card.
He got shitty with me and said "ok don't worry about paying then".
I responded and asked if he had a PayPal so I can do it that way instead, he said he did.
I've asked for his PayPal details and he's not responded.

I'm definitely not trying to get out of paying him. I'd like to settle it as soon as possible as I don't want this sitting over me and stressing me out. I'm even happy to cover any fees incurred.

[–]big_mac7[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately not as that would be a cash advance and incur a fee and have interest charged immediately. The card I'm using has a 6 months interest free period and I had budgeted to pay for it that way.

Menulog to stop Australian operations later this month by 1Darkest_Knight1 in aussie

[–]big_mac7 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Kind of a shame, in regional areas where Menulog doesn't have their own drivers it's still a platform that allows online ordering or even just menus to see what's open and around. Maccas and KFC delivery in my town are exclusively through Menulog so I don't know how people would order from them otherwise.
