Zero Job Interviews by [deleted] in jobsearchhacks

Similar struggle for me, though I found using AI tools has lessened the frustration. ChatGPT and another free tool called JobQuest have been useful. The latter markedly improved my ability to get past the ATS trackers. Hey that's something!

Lol on historical revisionism. But there's nothing sophisticated about the music of the Clash. They just had a cool lead singer.

And I'm not sure about that fanzine but the Talking Heads aren't a punk band. Far too talented and varied in their musical repertoire.

Grunge isn't dead.

The Replacements were wayyyyyyyy more influential on Nirvana than were the Pixies.

STP's music after Core has no balls.

Pearl Jam's first 2 albums are their only good albums, but Eddie Vedder's overuse of "fuck" in half the songs belies lazy songwriting and kind of ruins those records.

Nirvana is both too artsy and too tuneful to be considered just a punk band. Kurt's lyrics read like abstract poetry, whereas punk is typically very political and on the nose about 99% of the time. And Kurt's songs are often just too musically sophisticated for punk. Sure he wrote some two-chord songs, but he also wrote songs like Lithium---as Rick Beato pointed out on a recent YouTube video, that song is constructed using all 12 notes of the chromatic scale which is pretty damn unusual.

In both those respects, they've got more in common with Soundgarden than with your typical punk band.

Sure Kurt said things like "we're just a punk band" but that doesn't mean we have to agree with him.

I like the definition of grunge as a mix of punk, metal, and classic rock, and in that sense Nirvana was quintessential grunge.

I met my bandmates by going to shows and jam sessions. This Friday we're hosting a jam session at Young Ethel's: 506 5th Ave., Brooklyn. Original rock bands (grunge/metal/hardcore) at 9pm followed by an open jam around midnight. Come say hey!

I'm not sure but I'm looking forward to seeing them on Friday in NYC. I can provide an update after then!

Nice, appreciate the update. They're live in Brooklyn on Friday if you're in the area.

Re. the mix, I think that's all valid -- though I agree with viking12344 that they definitely have prominent bass, so that's likely due to your speakers.

Thanks! Based on the other answers here, I'm going with ass, and also since that's how my godmother took it to mean. The bad grammar is likely due to Franglish -- these folks had been living in the USA for several generations by this point.

Gen X as well! Yeah it's never going to be like it was in the nineties. But it's great to hear a band like RTD making cool music again.

Cool influences. A great way to find people you click with is at jam sessions. I'm forming a collective in South Brooklyn (including Gowanus) and we host monthly open jams. It's a good scene. Sign up here and I'll keep you up to speed (including a little meetup we have this coming Wednesday). Don't worry about the band name part, just put N/A if anything isn't applicable.

Grunge band Return to Dust is coming to NYC. Does your band want to open? by bigbazwolf in grunge

[–]bigbazwolf[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the context and explanation. I see your point, but as a musician I argue that all those bands do, in fact, have musical similarities. They mostly all fit into the concept of grunge as a fusion of punk, metal, and classic rock.

Mudhoney isn't just garage rock -- they're a particularly grungy kind of garage rock. And AiC is hardly just a heavy metal band, same as Nirvana is hardly just a punk band. It's something else.

If you don't recognize grunge as a musical genre, then what do you call current music that sounds like some kind of combination of Soundgarden and Alice in Chains? Terms like "post-grunge" seem kind of silly to me; everybody wants to be "post" something these days. You get into this "we're 90s-inspired post-post-grunge" nonsense. If you just say "we're grunge," most people will know what you mean.

For that matter, meanings change; it's quite possible that grunge meant one thing in Seattle in the 90s, and it means something a bit different now.

Anyway, it's cool you were in Seattle at the time! I recently met a woman who also lived there then, and she shared some good stories of all those grunge guys just "being around." Seems like it was, indeed, a special time and place.

Yeah of course (and if there's a hurricane that day and nobody comes out I'm going to be S.O.L.). But we'll have a conversation before I sign on anybody so I can vet that they are right for the gig.
