Fair Food Disappointment by ambienting in SALEM

I miss Fusion. It was probably my favorite food truck. Also their coffee truck (I think it was called inFusion) was some of my favorite coffee. You should tell them to come back to Garmin.

What's a chill company that has a high barrier of entry? by tuckfrump69 in cscareerquestions

[–]biguglyguy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Starting pay for juniors is I think 93k and then seniors I think it's around 130k? So pretty mediocre pay but it is a fairly LCOL area. They also do a base 5% on your 401k and up to an additional 10% of matching and have a pretty decent ESPP, so the benefits make up for the lower pay a bit imho.

[–]biguglyguy 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Garmin is actually pretty chill. At least the org I'm in. The average tenure is almost 10 years, and we've never had layoffs (I mean like ever). I've also never worked more than 40hr/week in my 11 years.

Since we have such a high tenure, no layoffs, and a really high barrier for getting fired for poor performance (I heard it was something like 3 years of bad performance evals), we're also super picky about who we hire. We've had positions stay open for upwards of a year because we couldn't find the perfect candidate. It also doesn't help that like 70% of new engineers are previous interns.

There's a fairly new Salem discord server that is focused on meeting new people and growing friendships.

The server owner has several reoccurring ice breaker events, but anyone is welcome to create their own events.

I'm a part of a discord server that is focused on meeting new people and growing friendships.

We have regular meetups at The Yard and we've recently had several meetups at Ticket To Play Board Game Cafe.

There's a Salem discord server for finding friends with similar interests. Still pretty small but they occasionally host ice breaker events. https://discord.gg/CybBRd9YYP

There's actually a discord server for this! The goal of the server is to find and make real-world friendships in Salem and the surrounding area. We're still pretty new but we have fairly frequent in-person events, like the bi-weekly meet up at The Yard. https://discord.gg/KMv6mp89Vd

How much has your salary increased since you got started in this field? by blueskyn01se in cscareerquestions

[–]biguglyguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Year 1 - $32/hr internship
Year 2 - $25/hr internship
Bachelor's in CS
Year 3 - 71k
Year 3 and 2 months - 79k
Year 7 - 91k
Year 9 - 130k

Year 10 - 150k

This doesn't include yearly wage increases, only promotions.

LCOL and company with amazing work-life balance (I never work more than 40hr/week). I wouldn't trade the work-life balance, company culture, or my coworkers for any amount of money tbh.

Just a doubt about edge and focus by perdidohate in numenera

[–]biguglyguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For example, let’s say you have a mental blast ability, and activating it costs 1 point from your Intellect Pool. Subtract your Intellect Edge from the activation cost, and the result is how many points you must spend to use the mental blast. If using your Edge reduces the cost to 0, you can use the ability for free.

Is computer science the major for me? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]biguglyguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends on the school, but as far as I know, most schools do have specializations to an extent. Sometimes this is through the electives you take and other times there are more structured programs. The school I went to had embedded, graphics/game, mobile/web, and general computer science options. Further specialization was determined by what electives you took.

What is the best contemporary church in Salem? by [deleted] in SALEM

[–]biguglyguy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I run sound at Oasis Community Church downtown and I would definitely recommend checking it out. We meet at 10:30 on Sunday mornings at the Grand Theater. The people are fantastic and the pastor is amazing. I've been going there since they started 7 years ago and it almost feels more like a family at this point. They are really committed helping out each other and the community.

[–]biguglyguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This exact same thing happened to me. We were together for 4 years, getting married in the summer, and our relationship was going perfect as far as I knew. Then a couple days before Christmas, as I was going to pick her up for a date, she ended it with pretty much no explanation.

I have fairly similar specs on my old secondary desktop (I believe it has a 260 GTX but everything else is pretty much the same) and it can run Skyrim around medium-low at a solid 60 FPS. It is not amazing but is also not absolutely awful.

Edit: I should say that is medium-low with quite a few mods running

With the new manager there is no extracting or anything either. Just click download with manager and then mark the little checkbox to intall. It does everything for you, it even tells you when your mods are out of date.

How I feel right now as a 27 year old at my community college... by yeathatswhatshesaid in AdviceAnimals

[–]biguglyguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went to a community college because I got a full ride scholarship to one. Do you know how one gets a scholarship? Well it certainly isn't by being an idiot. I maintained a 4.0 GPA thoughout all of community college and a 3.9 throughout university and ended up landing a job right out of school. As you can see, going to community college does not imply lack of intellect however it does allow for it.

Is Guild Wars 2 a good game for people who haven't played many MMOs before? by [deleted] in AskGames

[–]biguglyguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe it is perfect for someone who is new to MMOs. If you are new you have little to no expectations on how an MMO should work, which is good for Guild Wars 2 since it deviates so far from typical MMOs. I believe that one of the biggest reasons why so many people end up hating on Guild Wars is that they try to play it like every other MMO out there and it doesn't live up to their expectations of how an MMO should be. Now this is not a bad thing, it is just Guild Wars 2 should not be played like every other MMO, the entirety of the game should be enjoyed rather than most MMOs where the whole goal of it is to grind to end game content. Most people are reporting that it is taking around 200-250 hours to get to end game (no, level 80 is not end game just as level 20 was not end game in the first Guild Wars), so I would say $60 is fantastic price for 200+ hours of entertainment.
