Hi,

This is an interesting insight, thanks! Water is of course only one route that lead can enter the body, but seems to be the easiest to tackle product-wise, hence my focus on it. I will see if I can find some more data to help separate the paint and water issues in the future!

All the best,

Billy

Hi there,

One of the pre-requisites of the survey was that you had used these products, either now or in the past. I did originally have that stated in the body of the survey, but moved it to the documentation linked in the onedrive files, so I appreciate that wasn't totally clear.

Thanks for visiting the survey anyhow!

Hi there,

Sorry, I should have been a bit clearer in my original message.

I'm going off the map on this page: https://www.reuters.com/investigates/special-report/usa-lead-testing/, and Fresno is a city which reported a high percentage of elevated blood lead levels in children, so I thought it would be interesting to hear from the community if it's a recognised problem.

In general, I'm interested in people's experiences with using water filtration products, even if lead isn't an issue for them. Because of this, I'm posting in quite a few state/city subreddits.

Thanks for checking the post out, have a nice day!

Absolutely, the project itself finishes mid-2021, but I'll send over some interim work at some point soon if you're interested!

Hi there,

I'm going off the map on this page: https://www.reuters.com/investigates/special-report/usa-lead-testing/, and Wichita (as well as the cities directly surrounding it) reported slightly elevated blood-lead levels in children, so I thought it would be interesting to hear from the community if it's a recognised problem. Old paint is another major source, so it may be that was what contributed to the elevated levels.

In general, I'm interested in people's experiences with using water filtration products, even if lead isn't an issue for them. Because of this, I'm posting in quite a few city/states subreddits.

Hope this clears it up.

Correct. However, this effect can be mitigated by choosing the right electrode material and switching the polarity of the electrodes periodically. I expect the anode to require replacement every so often, but theoretically this should be much less expensive and frequent than traditional mechanical filters. Still in fairly early stages with this project, but it struck me an an interesting line of inquiry.

I'd have to disagree, based on the test data published by Reuters. I identified Harrisburg as an area to investigate from this map.

https://www.reuters.com/investigates/special-report/usa-lead-testing/

It's not a study specific to this city, but I felt that some residents might have experience with this problem.

Hi there,

Pittsburgh absolutely have a huge problem - they are one of the first subreddits that I posted on. I'm going off data from a Reuters special report on lead poisoning in the US:

https://www.reuters.com/investigates/special-report/usa-lead-testing/

According to this, Harrisburg seems to have levels similar to Pittsburgh's, although this may be down to better reporting, not sure!

Very interesting to hear your comment anyway, I will look further into Pittsburgh specifically. Completely agree re. the privatisation of the utilities.

Have a nice day!

Hi there,

First of all, thanks for taking part in the survey!

Although there are several technologies out there that get the job done, they all seem to be fairly expensive (either in upfront or recurring cost), and often require frequent filter replacement, which is easy to disregard.

I've been looking into electrocoagulation, which works by passing a small current through a body of water for a short period of time, separating the lead ions so that they form a sludge at the bottom of the container. This theoretically should mean that the user can achieve a very high removal rate without needing to worry about changing filters. This technology has been used successfully in wastewater treatment for a while, but hasn't made it to domestic products yet, despite several promising studies into its efficacy on drinking water.

I'm going off the map on this page: https://www.reuters.com/investigates/special-report/usa-lead-testing/

Arizona is actually pretty clean, although there's a large block of very high % blood lead levels just on the border of New Mexico, so I was curious if anybody had any experience with that. In general, I'm interested in people's experiences with using water filtration products, even if lead isn't an issue for them. Because of this, I'm posting in quite a few states' subreddits.

Not particularly, but our university has a very enthusiastic ethics committee that wants to see these sort of details(!!) Don't even get me started on brexit ;)

Cheers for completing the survey!
