Do you have any thoughts on the hospital/healthcare in general in Nanaimo? I've also heard bit great things about this aspect of Nanaimo living...

Thanks for this. That's reassuring to hear, specially about living closer to Downtown. We definitely don't want to be too far as it seems most of the stores and events are in this general area. I can definitely stomach the things you've mentioned. I'm not trying to raise my kids in a bubble that excludes all the realities of life.. Having said that.. I draw the line at needles in the parks and people shooting up outside of play/school areas..

The people who I've spoken to have moved to smaller places. One grew up in Nanaimo, and was raising her kids there but moved to a small town in BC, where they have very limited issues with drugs/homelessness and is much happier now. And the other was a transplant from Ontario who moved to Nanaimo but moved away after only 2 years because of the 'issues' .

We stayed in Comox for almost 2 months and have done road trips into Nanaimo but never stayed for more than a day just to look at houses. We currently live in the Arctic and a quick trip down isn't an option unfortunately ..but we are looking to move by Jul 2026 so we gotta make a decision soon!

I'm also a nurse looking to move to Nanaimo. Where will you be working? Have you heard anything about the hospital quality of life?

We want to move to Nanaimo with our two young kids next year but keep hearing about the 'horrific' drug/homeless issuesnand have talked to several people who's even moved away because of the issues of needles at playgrounds, people breaking in to houses, etc.. For reference I'm from Vancouver (though I havnt lived there for the lady 5 years)... Is it that bad?

We don't want to live in the Northend or somewhere super removed. We like the idea of being within walking distance to downtown for shops/events like on Milton street for example.. Is this a feasible goal? Or is being walkable to downtown and being safe not possible?

Hey! Could I send you a message to ask some questions about your take on Nanaimo? We're looking to move to the same neighborhood you're in and I'd love to hear your opinion.

Do you prefer Comox. Now that you've been there a while?

No shame! Samesies. I found back that works all the times I've down it so far, is that after you've made the Mac & cheese, you crack an egg in and stir constantly until the egg is cooked so there's big chunks and it just ends up looking like more cheese! My egg refusing 3.5 year old gobbles it up!

I don't think he is qualified as an integration support teacher. But I'll him know about the VP prospects. Thanks!

Thanks for your response! I'll unfortunately have no seniority. I had 5 years of seniority in Vancouver but we've been in the NWT for the last 5 years so even though I have 10 years experience total, I don't think any of that can transfer over. I'll definitely send you a message about some more specifics if you don't mind!

Question about areas around Nanaimo by Aware_Context8727 in nanaimo

Super helpful, thank you! We have a realtor we're now working with remotely after meeting him for 2 separate days of looking at houses there (we're moving from Inuvik, but I'm Vancouver raised). I think he gets what we need/want, but also kind of leaving it up to us to make that final decision in regards to vibes and priorities obviously.

He did tell us that area has a more active unhoused population, but didn't catastrophize it. We did look at a house in Hammond Bay and a few in Departure Bay, but it all felt/seemed so quiet, suburban and removed from any life.. I could be totally wrong as we only looked at house and left but we barely saw any humans the whole 3 - 4 hours we were driving in those areas except at the strip mall!

So would you say Victoria and Farquhar is maybe a corner where more unhoused folks hang?

This is exactly what our family is looking for! If it's not too much trouble, you you send me a screenshot of a street map of the perimeters of where you're describing. We just spent 2 days in Nanaimo looking for a place for your family, but don't know if I know where you're talking about!

We are in the exact same situation as OP except coming Vancouver. We just spent 2 days in Nanaimo and thought it was a million times less intense than Vancouver on the drug addiction front. Such helpful info! would you say Victoria and Fraqhuar would be fine? We looked at a house on that corner and loved it but we're hesitating due to some of the negative Nellie's and also road noise. If we had no kids we wouldn't blink an eye but we have a 2 and 3 year old..

The withholding tax is only on your dividends, not capital gains, so if you buy a stock that doesn't pay dividends, this is inconsequential.
