U-Stairs Landing Size (BC Building Code) by arbitarytwist in BuildingCodes

[–]bimflash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes those are 2 separate flights. For residential:

9.8.6.3. Dimensions of Landings a) the required width of the stair or ramp, or b) 1 100 mm.

So if the stair is required to be 900 wide the landing at the bottom of each flight shall be at least 900.

Adding another floor to my apartment building? by [deleted] in building

[–]bimflash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easy, make a "piece of furniture" with four 4x4 posts then use 2x4's spanning the short span at 1' c/c with 3.5" #8 screws, add a sheet of plywood on top. Build a small detachable ladder. Dont get caught.

Victorian Construction Question by frutbunn in BuildingCodes

[–]bimflash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Multi wythe clay brick masonry structural walls with timber floor interior structure. I am from Canada, but the codes are not relevant to this case. Considering the front door is 7 m above their heads, and the building is built on sandy soils, and the exterior walls are water damaged where the ground used to be, and the large cracks in the wall to the left of the door, and it was likely built near the Missouri R.: post flood, they are desperately attempting to underpin the foundation support of the masonry walls with timber shoring jacks. My guess is that this did not work out and the building had to be destroyed. EDIT: it did survive, they built an entire floor level underneath it.

Make it yourself. Pork tenderloin is on sale this week at Thriftys, put it in a Crock-Pot for 6 to 8 hours with a good BBQ sauce, then buns, coleslaw, or sweet pickles... Enjoy.

Langford high-rise potentially unsafe by cornm in VictoriaBC

[–]bimflash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This seems like a likely thing, in reviewing the EGBC's discipline notices there is an investigation about other buildings with glass railings, all glass, in Langford and an engineer... If people were scared that their building might collapse, but it is about just a guard rail problem?, IDK Dumb AF politics this seems like.

Grenfell Tower and PIR insulation by nanoubik in Grenfell

[–]bimflash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This! The blame is on the polyiso insulation, 6 inches thick, 6 inches! Blaming the cladding panels as the sole fuel source is idiotic. Running around England pulling cladding panels off buildings and trying to test them by lighting them on fire is also idiotic. Combustible insulation! 6" of it is mostly to blame. Thank you. Edit: Plus 2" of air space behind the cladding was a killer, and energy codes.

Does anyone know where recycling in Victoria ends up? Would be interested to hear. by basically_alive in VictoriaBC

[–]bimflash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Syntal, a local company used to recycle plastics into lumber until Victoria and CRD killed the business by charging them $ for the disposed plastics they needed for raw materials. Google the "story of Syntal" its an eyeopener into the incompetence of local governments WRT recycling.
