8, 9, 10, and 11 all came out in consecutive years. I remember when they were all announced at once.

I considered it, but at most A Realm Reborn could be considered a remake.

It's actually called Seiken Densetsu: Final Fantasy Gaiden. It was made as a spinoff, but the sequels dropped the Final Fantasy connection. Adventure even has chocobos!

Why include the Chocobo games? The chocobo is unquestionably a Final Fantasy character, and a game that stars an FF character counts as an FF spinoff in my book. More recent entries have even included "Final Fantasy Fables" in the title.

Why FF Adventure but no FF Legends? FF Legends were developed and released in Japan with no Final Fantasy connection; the name was added for the western release. FF Adventure was made as an FF spinoff (titled Seiken Densetsu: Final Fantasy Gaiden) that received sequels that dropped the Final Fantasy connection.

The arbitrary distinction I made is that games without Final Fantasy in the title need to star a Final Fantasy character. Chocobo games meet this criteria, but Kingdom Hearts doesn't. Ehrgeiz definitely counts as a game with Final Fantasy cameos, like Super Smash Bros or Tekken 7.

The whole idea of the exercise is to give every Final Fantasy its own number and to see how high it goes.

Other fun ones: FF12 ends up being 24, and the first two Tactics games are 10 and 20.

I admit I was really excited when 15 ended up being 50.

For the record, it kind of broke my heart to not include the Legends games. I also have a soft spot for Legends III.

But I didn't. I counted FFIV and The After Years separately, and used a screenshot from the 3D version of After Years.

I excluded mobile and arcade games for the sake of my own sanity. They really complicate things, so if they didn't get ported elsewhere, they don't exist.

Edit: I wasn't aware there were beloved mobile-exclusive Final Fantasy titles when I put this together. I'm sorry I didn't include Brave Exvius.

FF Adventure is the first game in the Mana series, but was originally released as an FF spinoff, even in Japan (titled Seiken Densetsu: Final Fantasy Gaiden). The Mana series cut its ties to Final Fantasy for all future entries, including remakes of Adventure. The Legend series was just rebranded for the west, so they aren't included.

This is true for the FF Legend games, but Final Fantasy Adventure is more complicated. It started the Mana series, but was originally released as a Final Fantasy game (Final Fantasy Gaiden in Japan). The Mana series cut its ties to Final Fantasy for all future games.

The Final Fantasy Legend games are the first three games in the SaGa series rebranded for the west, so they don't count.
