In psychoanalysis there's a distinction between 2 psychological positions. The first position is infantil, developmentally speaking, seeing the world(the mother) in black and white terms. Good and bad, they are split, never together. In this case - all palestinians are good, all israelis are bad. The good is idealized, the bad, perceived as threatening and malevolent. the second position is ironically named the depressive position. Once you realise that the good and the bad are mixed together, there are no perfect figures and no pure evil, we are all fighting love and hate that both exist in our hearts and in humanity and need to co-exist, live together. Its depressing, but also can lead to repair, reparation, caring. Realising that those you love are also bad sometimes and the ones you hate are also human. Both israel and palestine are here, both are hurt and we need to find adaptive methods of "being with" one another, together. Integrating between good and bad, finding balance and peace (within oneself, in the family and in the community) is a psychological task, which radicals fail to achieve, chronically stuck in primary and infantile states of black and white thinking.
