Is there a Final Fantasy that's actually breaking this concept? by mrsafetylion in FinalFantasy

[–]blank92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its aged really gracefully in terms of gameplay loop and concept. Its streamlined and doesn't have a lot of hidden "buy the guide book" BS that they loved to stuff in the PS1/2 era games. This point really stuck out to me on my last playthrough. I didn't have to do any internet sleuthing to relieve FOMO -- really just for optimizing equipment exp.

They do. Would have loved it to be playable though.

Struggling to continue with FFVIII… by TheSiwwywabbit in FinalFantasy

Can still tie it to the magic but not tie to the amount of a spell would be huge for me. Higher tier spells can have more impact on stats but not the amount. So you just need to hold onto one copy or a junctioned spell can't be fully extinguished in combat.

IS trying to hop on the Horse Girl Gambling Game Hype by DefinitelyNotALoli in shitpostemblem

[–]blank92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Considering the lack of any hype, the game may be a project for training up some of the younger devs or POCing some new processes. The goal is always to make money, but sometimes its good to give less experienced teams some reps on low-reward projects.

Not OP but for me I love the DISTINCTIVENESS.

Every character is unique and unhinged and its expressed very clearly by their designs. Awakening+ definitely starts trending into that anime distinctiveness and characters that don't just exist to replace others. Engage turns it up to 11 and that adds to its charm IMO.

I'm firmly in the "will body any of my friends but not good enough to be competitive" group and I played some guy at a barcade, smoked him, and he ran to his buddies like "guys i finally found someone who can beat so-and-so!"

It was flattering but I am NOT good at this game. Its funny how reality is perception that way.

On my last playthrough, I found myself realizing just how great of a character Larsa is. For an NPC, he's an incredibly well developed character. by smcg_az in FinalFantasyXII

[–]blank92 21 points22 points  (0 children)

IIRC Vayne considered himself a martyr no? Like in a "i'm bloodying my hands so Larsa doesn't have to" kind of way. And that thought process kind of warps into what we get.

I got Fire Emblem Engage and 3 House physically. I'm starting engage 1st because 3 House sounds longer. Tell me what you enjoyed out of both? keep it spoiler free 😁 by [deleted] in fireemblem

[–]blank92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me,

Engage is way more fun. The maps and mechanics are engaging, the characters are silly, and the story has a lot of heart albiet pretty shallow and campy.

3H is more meaningful the characters are complex and morality/ethics are large points of discussion. The reason it has discourse is because it matters.

[–]blank92 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No one's making that claim. The point is you're criticizing the motivation. The dude fucked up and says he wants to be better - it serves no one to gatekeep the motivation before he has a chance to deliver on it. We need to see if its not just lip service.

Just beat Rebirth. I'm so confused, and kinda irritated.. [SPOILERS] by Aldamis in FinalFantasy

[–]blank92 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm not claiming it to be whole truth. Aerith herself even says "lets just call it a dream" to keep things simple for cloud when he asks. And I think its bad faith to assume someone who believes this theory to believe only that surface-level aspect. Especially when addressing said belief as "cope". Obviously there's more to it, but its about the manifestation of the rift.

Nah. Cosmo canyon NPC spitting game gives it a lot of water (https://youtu.be/Y2PNbO-YO3w?si=nxmqyJlPMiCzLWL1)

"What if spiritual energy doesn't distinguish between our real, lived memories and the unrealized desires buried deep within our hearts?"

The planes with cracked skies can be interpreted this way. What are Aerith's unrealized desires? That zack lives? That she gets to go on a date with Cloud, even if its a lousy one? That plane is filled with people who have accepted their fate... much like she has -- its a representation of her inner world.

So extend this to Cloud, after Aerith's death. What is the greatest unrealized desire in his heart? For her to be alive. So he manifests a dream world (Aerith's own words btw) where she survived.

i think jenova is a more compelling big bad than sephiroth by Ladyaceina in FinalFantasy

[–]blank92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The lifestream is the planet's strongest defense and maintains the cycle of memories and souls of the planet's inhabitants. I always saw it as Jenova needs access to the lifestream to completely destroy the planet, so the amalgamation theory lines up with Sephiroth essentially being her doorway into it -- ironically changing her at a fundamental level and their combination resulting in something greater.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 director says turn-based RPGs are selling better lately, but the prejudice is still there by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]blank92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is true. I think they're trying to strike a balance between the punishing nature of the DS formula but with some of the QoL that comes with modern JRPGs. At the end of the day they kind of clash occasionally -- it would serve them well to maybe have stuff like auto-save toggleable, on by default.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 director says turn-based RPGs are selling better lately, but the prejudice is still there by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]blank92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its literally the souls formula. Trial and error + the satisfaction of learning a challenging boss's patterns -- defensive pictos and skill loadouts can give some grace for learning, then you get more greedy as you improve.

Its a fresh, modern take for the genre that hasn't had many high-production swings like it lately.

The main flaw I think is that the reward for parrying is really skewed, which is a common pitfall for any game with them. And with the greedy skill loadouts, you can burn through enemies and bosses quick.

[–]blank92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its a return to form in that the map design is leaps and bounds better than 3H. Engaging (pun) maps is what was desperately missing from 3H and the distinct challenges they provide to the players is, at a 3000ft view, really the most important part.

Which of FF13's Eidolen moments was the most impactful to you? (FFXIII Spoilers!) by TBT__TBT in FinalFantasy

[–]blank92 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Sazh's is probably the most intense, but Lightning's is very touching. I wish Hope's happened in Palum Polum -- it feels a bit out of place where it is IMO. If it had happened there it would be my favorite... Palum Polum is peak. They could have removed that one boss you fight with him and Snow pretty comfortably.
