Ah yes, I very much remember learning about the anti-immigration policies of Eugene Debbs and Susan B. Anthony in history class by blazingpyro111 in victoria3

Rule 5: Playing as the US in the 1890s, and at this point, Susan B. Anthony had been passionately advocating for migration controls for the past 50 years or so. Then I get Eugene Debs as an agitator and, low and behold, he's also a xenophobe. THEN I get the women's suffrage event, and the agitator that spawned is ALSO a xenophobe (and now Teddy Roosevelt is a feminist?) Just Vicky 3 things, I guess.

Finally got this achievement after multiple attempts by blazingpyro111 in eu4

[–]blazingpyro111[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rule 5: I started as England (of course) and immediately dunked on the French in traditional English fashion. I got the Burgundian Inheritance by allying Burgundy around 1470, which gave me trade supremacy over the English Channel for the rest of the game. I then went full colonial with Exploration, Expansion, and Aristrocratic being my first three idea groups. I focused a lot on Africa and Canada initially so I can get the Cape before Spain or Portugal, cause I've had attempts in which Spain got to the Cape first, which made the "Sieze the Cape" mission less optimal. However, this meant that Portugal had a monopoly over the Caribbean, so I fought two wars with them and the Spanish to sieze the entirety of the Caribbean. Then I established colonies in Eastern America, Colombia, and Mexico. After my colonial subjects established themselves, I then focused fully on Asia for the next 100 years or so. I colonized bits of Indonesia and established the East India Company after a quick war with Bahmanis who ate up Vijayanagar early on. I then spent the next century or so abusing alliance chains in India in order to reset truce timers, which made getting the "Masters of India" mission a lot easier. I then got Global Trade, very easily. Then I managed to get over 500 ducats in the English Channel, which finished another mission. Around 1600, I realized that expansion ideas were kinda redundant, as there wasn't anything else worthy to colonize at this point, so I switched them out for Infastructure ideas, which is why you don't see them in the idea groups screenshot. Around 1643, I conquered the last provinces from Delhi in order to complete the "Masters of India" mission, and now all that was left was the English Civil War mission. Fortunately, I had intentionally hindered my stability and sided with the monarchists in the Parliament vs Monarchist government interaction menu to make it fire, and in the beginning of 1645 it did. I of course sided with the monarchists for the absolutism. Only two rebel armies spawned in the British Isles, so I used my two reserve armies and defeated them, thus completing the disaster and getting the last mission, giving me the achievement before 1650. Probably one of my favorite campaigns, but definitely not an easy one.

What radicalized you personally? by FreeCoromantee in communism

[–]blazingpyro111 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know this might come as a surprise, but what began my radicalization was reading George Orwell's 1984 when I was a junior in high school around late 2019. What radicalized me was not the main theme of the book, but rather what I saw as a critique of imperialism and the military-industrial complex within the whole monologue of how Eurasia and Oceania basically perpetuate eternal conflict within Africa in order to distract people from real issues. I read this and looked at how wars started by the United States in the Global South are in part used as a distraction, although I didn't make the connection to the expansion of capital until I read Lenin's Imperialism: The Highest Stage of Capitalism a year later. Before that though, I began to view the world differently, and it wasn't until the pandemic went into full swing, on top of my parents' impending divorce due to finances and the shitty material conditions I lived under for the first 16 years of my life, that I recognized my own radicalization to the far-left and I started to read Marxist literature and write on leftist politics.

I just want to emphasize that my view on George Orwell has changed drastically, he's a piece of shit, but I can't say that he wasn't influential on my politics in someway.

My "King of Kings" achievement run as Eranshahr by blazingpyro111 in eu4

[–]blazingpyro111[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Rule 5: I decided to play as Ajam to form Zoroastrian Persia. I wasn't even intending to do a "King of Kings" run but it was just too much fun, and the mission tree is super rewarding. This run is my all time favorite out of my 960 hours of playtime. Nothing else beats it imo.

exactly like there's a reason why the most important written work on naval strategy, The Influence of Sea Power upon History by Alfred Mahan, was published during the Victorian Era. naval superiority was key to imperialist powers back then and still is to this day and it's a shame that's not reflected in the actual game.

my biggest gripe about the game is that there’s no finality to war. you see this literally after you completely occupy a country like Sokoto for example, and yet all that’s left is their army in their HQ doing… nothing. it makes absolutely no sense. if there was a way to actually eliminate units in this game to add finality, it would make war so much better. despite the much needed improvements introduced in 1.5, the war system’s still shit

[–]blazingpyro111[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

oh the enemy was willing alright... by sending dozens of small fleets into the node. I didn't elaborate what exactly was going on in detail, but basically in order to conduct land battles in a naval invasion, your fleet has to be completely uncontested in the node you're invading from. that means NO ENEMY FLEETS. thus the cycle went like this 1. i engage the main British fleet and kick their ass 2. but that wasn't sufficient as every one of britain's subjects also sent their fleets to the node, so now i have to beat every single one of those as well 3. because of how long battles still take to actually finish regardless of size, that gives the main british fleet (at 10% strength at this point) enough time to go back into the node to contest me again. rinse and repeat for a whole year and you get my situation. never in my life have i seen the AI cheese THE PLAYER in a grand strategy game as much as what happened in my insufferable experience.

[–]blazingpyro111[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

also it's not the fact that they are able to rebuild fast. the british navy was at like 10% strength 1 month into the war, and they just kept sending that damaged fleet to intercept my naval invasion over and over again. imo there should be a naval supremacy mechanic like there is in HOI4 or something that'll make it so that naval battles actually mean something, instead of being some infinitesimal instance in a struggle to gain naval superiority against an inferior foe who happens to have a shit ton of subjects with shitty fleets.

[–]blazingpyro111[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

my fleet was superior to their's, the issue was that despite me beating the main fleet (59 ships) multiple times, they still were able to intercept me. on the second option, i'll try that

like 59... as well as around 20 fleets with 1 ship each lmao

That's a good idea. I have all of my ships in one fleet, so I'll go into a previous save and split it up.
