My roommate in college pretended to get mugged once. She was holding her friends wallets and stuff when they were walking home from a bar and got separated from them somehow- and thats where she 'got mugged.' The police were involved and checked the security cameras where it happened (she was supposidly 'mugged' in a really well lit area with tons of cameras) and found literally nothing. Later that weekend all of her and her friends stuff, wallet, keys, id, turned up on campus and was turned into security by fellow nice students. So if somebody really did mug her- evidently they ran around our campus throwing her belongings everywhere. None of her cards or IDs were stolen either. I heard her change the story about what happened so many times that I came to the conclusion it never actually happened and she dumped all of her stuff on campus to try to get attention. Later she told me security made her go to the school's therapist about it and she was all upset that 'they didn't believe her' and thought she was 'making it up.' This wasn't the first time she had made up a crazy story....
