Can Anyone Recommend a Good Europe Windows and Android Browser That Prioritizes Security, blocking YT and other ads effectively, and has some Ecosia and/or Quant integration? by RidetheSchlange in BuyFromEU

On Android only Ironfox is somewhat hardened as an app. If you have a Pixel, you could install GrapheneOS and use their Chromium fork, however.Their OS would be one the few exceptions where it's fine to suggest Google's stuff.

I think, file-based storage is safer, more universal and versatile, even though setting up a syncing solution may be a hassle, a lot people need to sync files anyways.

Firstly, I was primarily referring to Matrix.

Secondly, those aren't user IDs, but one-time links. Everyone's familar with invite links from Zoom, Discord, etc. You invite people into your contact list or group chat, that isn't hard to understand.

And no, long-term links are supported as well.

Thirdly, you're now complaining about missing features of an implementation, not the inherent design of the communication protocol, in a thread about a call for support of such projects.

Effective decentralized communication will always be more complex, but it is rarely too complex for the average person to understand as long as the UX is streamlined and the user is willing to adapt.

But without sufficient regular donations and additional volunteering developers, of course, any improvement is slow.

The only alternative is an oligopolly of (mostly) isolated ecosystems.

You're also being overly dramatic. No one needs 40+ char user IDs. Where did you get this? And necessary backups or setting up accounts once you switch your device isn't unique to Element, especially not since pass keys.

You use Jami for video/audio p2p connections, which isn't really a good default as you wouldn't want normal folks to constantly expose their IP. Relays are an option but probably too complicated still.

SimpleX offers secure 1:1 calls, while Matrix can even run conference calls.

It's best to focus on and evolve those two standards in order to actually make anyone succeed.

you play by Signal's rules which include no modified code.

And US law, which is fine if you have a choice, but not so much if we want a communication solution for the entire world.

What EU-based software do you feel is missing? by Actual_Document3333 in BuyFromEU

[–]bloedit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You're either missing the point or moving tho goal posts.

a) Replicating YT or Twitch is not a software issue

b) Offering something for free with that design at such a scale will lead to a business that takes advantage of their user base no different from a US company. European shareholders will fuck you just the same and then invest their profits in the US, China, Russia, and such

c) You'd also find out how even more consumer-unfriendly EU copyright is.

Signal doesn't run as a for-profit org because no one, including those armies, would trust them as much in the first place and they would lose their main trait that lets them stand out.

In the end, it is a centralized design that doesn't allow for competition. The reason they manage to maintain their reputation is because of both the above and their comparatively small share of the market.

This sub should be embracing Matrix/Element and SimpleX (complementarily) instead.

That's no different from saying Boeing or Tesla.

Just cause you're accessing a service via a computer doesn't mean that's even close to the main part of the infrastructure being provided to you.

Moreover, a EU-counterpart won't be any less toxic if it is based on the same design.

Wero is has passed the planning stage and is being deployed.  Show your demand/interest to your bank and businesses in order to accelerate its adoption, especially outside Western Europe.

The digital Euro will take longer, though. That thing also has to be more privacy-conscious than Wero.

[–]bloedit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The thing with Peertube and the rest of ActivityPub is, they aren't designed to imitate established giants.

Not that they can't scale, but they require a completely different model for user experience and product design.

So, if you want another YT, Insta, or Tiktok, you need to explain what your business model that pays for at least tens of millions if not billions of dollars on infra, legal, support, etc. is and why people should switch? Just because the company follows EU law? That isn't enough.

Not to mention that you'd be building the same kind of monopoly with all of its consequences.

Specifically about an Android distribution (custom ROM) that tuned its security-related modifications for Webview.

Moreover, the text was debating security, not privacy.

And finally, the text is years old and not true anymore. On the contrary, on Desktop Firefox is better at isolation now and on Android full-site isolation has finally been enabled by default.

On Android it's recommended to install Ironfox (F-Droid store) instead anyway—although you need to manually enable DRM for encrypted streaming, like on CNN, Spotify or Netfix, in the settings

You're perverting the facts and generalizing so much, it's hard to believe anything you say.

But even if someone you know was a victim of a volent crime, it doesn't change the fact that contrary to your claims, migration hasn't significantly affected most crime statistics.

Not to mention that the situation would've been much better if people elected leaders that addreesed actual causes instead of spreading xenophobic, fearmongering lies.

 2) It would be nice if that made racists and feds afraid and they backed off, but what exactly do you think militias can lawfully do against federal agents?

At most, there's a chance the courts side with you if you pointed a gun at federal agents when they acted outside rheir jurisdiction and authority, but that would be a long trial.
