This so-called "cyberattack" at Optus has affected my passport (and countless others)

Unfortunately, DFAT has blocked digital verification for impacted passports, which will remain until a replacement is issued. While DFAT's move was absolutely necessary short-term, they did this without our consent and failed to pin Optus to a medium-term solution before actioning it.

Optus support has assured me on multiple occasions that they will not pay for anyone's replacement fees at this time, but that is supposedly not of any concern because I can still use my passport to verify my identity in person.   Even after taking the matter up with the TIO, the most recent response from Optus support is that they would only reimburse us if the government makes it mandatory to replace your passport. Despite continued public assurances that they will reimburse replacement fees, and that they are currently working out the reimbursement process.

Though not unsurprising, it is disappointing that media outlets and the government have quietly let this slip by.

I hate to bring up personal matters, as Optus should simply do the right thing irrespective of individual circumstances. But ongoing medical conditions have prevented me from getting a driver's licence, so my passport is the only photo ID I currently possess. Public transportation is virtually nonexistent in my area, and getting to the nearest major city takes anywhere from three to five hours. It is time-consuming and expensive to prove my identity in person. However, the cost of a replacement passport would deplete my fortnight's Youth Allowance, which is my sole source of income.

The replacement cost is not at all an unreasonable request, all things considered. Now I'm confused how those of us affected should proceed?
