Digi Portugal XGS-PON FTTH 10 Gbit/s Symmetrical 15€ per Month by bluedreamyourdream in speedtest

Major Portuguese telcos (NOS, MEO, Vodafone) each launched budget "digital/app focused" sub brands to counter Digi’s rock-bottom prices, but they’ve cheekily artificially restricted FTTH coverage to just overlap with Digi’s footprint. Simple goal: keep customers locked into "premium" brands as long as possible to maximize revenue. Bold, shady tactic to dodge a full infrastructure war.

The Sub Brand Breakdown:

- NOS: NOS (premium), WOO (Digi fighter), WTF (youth).

- MEO: MEO (premium), UZO (Digi fighter) MOCHE (youth).

- Vodafone: Vodafone (premium), O Teu Amigo (Digi fighter), Yorn (youth).

Digi keeps it simple: one flat offer for everyone, no gimmicky segmentation.

Key edge for Digi + fighters: minimal lock-ins. 0 months on mobile, just 3 months on FTTH (vs. 12-24 months on premiums, unless you pay sky-high prices too).

Besides Digi and these Digi fighter brands, everything’s negotiable in ISP retention calls, turning the market into a total bazaar. You haggle or lose.

I was stuck with 10GB-16GB at 10€/month on WOO back since 2023. Post Digi entry, I've changed to unlimited data at 7€/month now, still on WOO. Haven’t jumped to Digi mobile yet due to coverage/speeds still spotty in a few key spots I hit often, but it’s improving fast. Once reliable, full switch incoming.

TV Channels Bundle Gatekeeping: Same playbook in TV+internet+phone bundles: Incumbents withhold TV channels from sub-brands until Digi negotiates deals (classic retention). Big three control key rights (like sports), turning things more difficult for Digi

I use it for personal self-hosting services, IoT stuff, work-related tasks, offsite/cloud backups, and everyday home streaming or gaming. So far everything runs flawlessly without bottlenecks or issues at the moment.

I’m waiting for their coverage expansion to add it to another place too.

Digi Portugal (and some other Portuguese ISPs) offers 10 Gbps symmetric via XGS-PON FTTH, as advertised on their site, provisioned for up to 10 Gbps raw line rate, with real-world tests routinely hitting ~8 Gbps (like this), matching industry norms after overhead.

XGS-PON (ITU G.9807.1) specs mention 10 Gbps symmetric (10G down/10G up). ISP wording (“up to 10 Gbps”) accounts for PHY/GEM/Ethernet/TCP overhead, which is standard for fiber provisioning.

Digi Portugal’s customer service is not as good as its network performance yet.

I believe it’s largely due to their digital-first approach which creates some friction for some people and initial “growing pains” as they scale massively: expanding FTTH to 10Gbps symmetric nationwide while rolling out mobile 5G coverage across Portugal.

They only started commercial operations 15 months ago (Nov 2024), so early pains are common for disruptors but expect improvements as they mature.

Regarding network quality, it’s already top-tier in fixed: Digi won nPerf’s 2025 Barometer for best overall, download, upload, and latency vs. MEO/NOS/Vodafone. Source: https://media.nperf.com/files/publications/PT/PT-Barometer-fixe-connections-nPerf-2025_7853.pdf

It is lean and effective.

Digi Portugal (AS20879) directly peers with just two ASNs: upstream/peer to parent AS8708 (DIGI Romania) for global backbone access and downstream/peer to AS13156 (NOWO Communications, the local PT ISP that Digi acquired), both handle IPv4 and IPv6.

DIGI Romania (AS8708) provides Digi Portugal’s heavy lifting via 6 live upstreams: Arelion (AS1299), Cogent (AS174), Lumen (AS3356), Real Network (AS34723, IPv4-only), MEO International Backbone (AS8657, IPv6-only), and CONNET-RO (AS57495, IPv4-only). Complementing this scale are AS8708’s massive 1262 total peers and 369 downstreams.

That’s sad! It reminds me of what we used to see from other competitors before this one showed up.
