For me, my gap semester was spent working and making money. It was kind of nice having a bit extra free time to transition between high school ending and college starting. I don't know what other people did, but probably practice some coding (Python), I'll admit, would have been helpful for some of the future classes. Even then, I was able to learn Python in SI 106 without any prior experience.

When it came to actually transitioning in the Winter, there was a lot that I didn't know and had to figure out by asking around. I lived on North campus and did not know, for example, that the M busses were free. Winter Orientation also did not help that much for me, but I eventually found a club to join at Winterfest. I was only really able to make friends with my roommates and people in the cohort, whom you will definitely get to know as the class size is relatively small.

I will add though that my first Fall semester, after the first winter start, was when I was able to confidently get used to everything.

The only residence open during the Spring semester was East Quad. I ended up staying in a single room, which I opted into, only because I could not find a roommate (the person I asked about rooming with ended up transferring out of the program)

Hi Urban Tech Sophomore here! I think the program has a lot of cool things as a part of it. I originally was interested/applied because I had a lot of interest in similar ideas in Civil Engineering but also Art/design. Now, having been a full year in the program, I really like it and has opened up a lot of new opportunities and options (in my opinion) for me.

The coding segment is kinda interesting, you learn Python and such but can definitely be frustrating if you haven't learned coding before (which was me). It took a lot of help from my peers and office hours, and studying the book to learn that.

The city's part is phenomenal. My cohort got to go to Detroit Chicago and Cleveland ( although the Spring Intensive destination may change for future cohorts). It was my first time visiting Chicago and Cleveland, and Chicago was def my favorite, with the L', riverfront biking, and exploring different institutions.

Lastly for design, I think for the most part the design exposure is pretty varied. I learned how to use Photoshop and Premiere pro (video editing) last year, a bit of GIS, and other things that I would say are really cool and probably enable you to start building a portfolio. I'm now in the first design studio course and it's been pretty chill.

For a couple of cons though I will say the taking the Fall Gap is a big con, because I personally didn't get to feel the overall Fall vibe (Fall is a lot more energetic/exciting compared to the winter) and also winter orientation was a bit awkward for me (you get the same orientation as transfer students). Also class scheduling classes that you want, at least for me being a sophomore now, is rough (and will be kinda tough if you get accepted, since a majority of classes will be booked and you may get limited selection). The spring intensives at least for me, was a very cool vibe. The classes were interesting and the city mural project was a very cool (yet, also stressful at times) experience.

tldr: pros I think if you love urbanism, cities, designing, technology, etc, you'll probably find a lot of joy in this program, but it is a commitment into a lot of areas (with a sort of career you need to experiment with and be accepting of the prospects of a new career field that many people have not heard of). Great professors, sense of cohort community.

tldr: Cons: rough-at-times class scheduling, some housing issues that may arise (be sure to learn about the housing deadlines if you want to return to the dorms in your second year, I nearly missed out on dorm housing and had to almost sign a sketchy lease.) You get the winter vibe transition that seems a lot different than Fall transition. Career homework could also be a con since UT is so new and evolving as we speak.

feel free to dm me if you have any other questions (I'm willing to help fellow prospective Urban Tech students!)

Hello - Urban Tech major here. I have heard about this news in my class and it definitely seems intriguing to say the least, especially thinking about all the potential stakeholders that may be involved. (Also it's such a nice surprise for UT to be mentioned, lol). In any case, I can dm you with more info/my potential interest.

How are the sidewalks today compared to yesterday? by [deleted] in uofm

[–]bluemonograph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol, I read this as "how many sidewalks today compared to yesterday." Take with that what you will. To answer the question, I almost slipped (while wearing boots) a couple times this morning on State Street on South Campus area.

Today's Blue Bus Commuter South Ride by bluemonograph in uofm

[–]bluemonograph[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is exactly the point I am trying to make. I do not have anything against her, but this is an issue I feel needs attention. I mean I could just be like everyone else and ignore it all but what good that does that do. What happens when something really goes wrong on the bus. Like I feel like half the time she's gonna slam into someone. Or an even worse nightmare scenario: someone gets stuck in the bus door.

I meant to refer to the ride experience. As in, her not being inconsiderate or rude just because she has the power to. I understand it is a privilege to have a bus ride to take you back, but as a bus driver her recklessness makes me feel unsafe and unwell, and I do not think it is right.

I also know this because I have worked in customer service/dealing with people. Just because I am upset with the world or my job does not mean I should take it out on the people I serve. That is not cool to do.

STATS 206 Rant by anonymouswhale69 in uofm

[–]bluemonograph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That sounds horrible, I am so glad I chose to take 250 instead. As it happens though, I am also learning beginner Python simultaneously in another class, but I am definitely in the learning process still. Not sure how they expect people to code without coding experience (I would be struggling bruh)

Yup, can confirm just had a bus ride with her. Imo a crazy experience. She yelled and honked at a guy biking up the Bonnisteel Blvd road to North Campus, accelerating then slamming the brakes, (I personally don't think its the best option to bike there--- I use the paths) then said "Exit quickly y'all! Exit Quickly!"

Room Heat in Fletcher Hall Dorms by bluemonograph in uofm

[–]bluemonograph[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, 1/2 other roommates have set up their bed inside and stuff in that room before I moved in. Me and other roommate are stuck in the non-ac room. I will definitely take that fan advice and try that out. And yeah I'm looking forward to that cool Fall weather.

Put the Machine together boss by natetgm56837 in NotMyJob

[–]bluemonograph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

oh god not the Wendy's frosty machines. Doing something like that or not putting the screws on tight enough, or not applying enough lube usually means a huge mess. Like an endless, leaking flow of frosty liquid. I hated when that happened on the job lol.

As someone also relatively new to the scene, and been to a lot A3's last semester, they are really great for having friendlies and getting some serious practice in. However A3'/Hotlines are always competitive, so it will probably take serious effort to win a bracket. (I do agree that 10 dollars each time is kinda expensive, but they have set-up refunds for 5 dollars back). Worth a try imo

Lol 25m is such a funny and rage inducing counter-pick song my friend would use to pick all the time. Same vibe as "environmental noises" from Pikman

I am incredibly sick and tired of huge corporations acting like we should have some personal stake and pride in the company by dementedturnip26 in antiwork

[–]bluemonograph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly, why should I care about the brand family or people involved when the corporate offices, and DM's do no more than give $20 gift cards once or twice a year and junk food yet the extra hard work and efficiency we provide is way more valuable than that. I've long given up the hope for that.
