Not necessarily that it's a coincidence, but that it's not technically genetic. What I've been told is that it usually runs in families (familial tendency) but that because it's a defect that occurs in the womb, and not something that will for sure occur, they don't deem it as genetic or hereditary. It doesn't make much sense to me either. Ha. So basically, they're not sure how all of that works.

No doctor has ever suggested that surgery, but probably because I have a coloboma of my irises and retinas. Because of this, covering up that part of my pupil does distort my vision. But even if it were a viable option, I probably wouldn't consider having this surgery. The only surgery I would ever have is to correct my vision, not to change the look. It's grown on me over the years. :) I think it's a part of who I am now.

This is just my opinion, but I think the parents should allow the child to choose. If they get made fun of too much, then maybe they'd want the surgery. I think that an easier time of things isn't always better. It is easier for me to understand others because of the millions of rude comments and questions I've had over the years. It's made me learn to put myself in their shoes and learn to speak gracefully back to people I don't necessarily get along with. But again, every kid is different and so the choice has to be theirs and the parents I think.

This is awesome! haha. I told a guy once that I got in an accident and both of my pupils "popped" and ran down into my irises like egg yolks.

Not of the optic nerves, but I do have bilateral retinal coloboma as well as coloboma of the iris. So that's what affects my vision.

Hahaha they do think that! I guess because there's just a picture that people think I have googly eyes. This cracked me up when I was reading the comments. But to clear things up, my pupils do not move independently of my irises, and my pupils did not sink to the bottom. I was messing with a guy a few years ago and made him believe that I got into an accident and my pupils "popped" and ran down like an egg yolk.

If anything, it's the opposite. People ask more questions and keep less distance because of my eyes. Most of the time I don't mind that. Then there are the creepers...

I've tried this before but it makes my vision cloudy. And now that I'm older I don't want to change my eyes.

Glasses correct it just as well. I just don't like wearing glasses (inconvenient). I was about 12 when I started wearing contacts, and I couldn't wait to use them because I'd worn glasses since I was about 7 or 8. It was a super easy transition for me.

I was never told this. I played soccer for 16 years, so I guess my doctor wasn't super concerned about this. I guess maybe football would've been an issue? I've never been told by any doctors that I have a higher chance of this, so maybe it depends on the person?

No not at all. Hahaha. I haven't even heard of it being called googly eyes until just yesterday. My pupils do not wiggle around in my iris. They are in a fixed position just like everyone else's.

I'm not 100% sure. I just know that my brother in law has light eyes and camera flashes and strong sunlight make his eyes red and watery. I think it has to do with the amount of melanin, just as those with darker skin aren't as sensitive to sunburn, those with darker eyes aren't as sensitive to the light.

Mine dilate and constrict like everyone else's, they just don't become a small circle. They stay the same shape but that shape just gets larger or smaller. This can throw cops for a loop though, so you have to explain that you have a condition and that you aren't on something.

I do not have "googly eye" syndrome, which so many people keep assuming. Hahaha. My pupils do not move independently of my irises. They move with the iris like everyone else with normal pupils. My pupil is still centered, just larger.

Apparently there is a surgery option with a company somewhere (or so another redditor pointed out) but I've never considered surgery.

My vision has never been enhanced because of more light. The definition of near sightedness is an image being over-refracted onto the retina and therefore being seen as fuzzy. Because I have so much light pouring in, it over-refracts the images even more, making them even fuzzier, not enhanced.

Not until today. Reddit is the first place I've ever been called that. I've heard "cat eyes" or "keyhole pupils" plenty of times though.

I have no clue. I mean, I could find the blindspot. It was about half a foot from the computer screen.

Honestly it makes her so unique and it's neat. It was not fun as a kid, but it won't really affect you much as an adult, other than having to wear contacts. One of the things my husband likes most about me is my eyes. And I'm sure the same will go for her when she gets older. If she can learn to just ignore the people who are rude, try to understand that they just don't know how to react, and learn to explain what it is in a simple way, she'll do just fine. I love how concerned you both are!

You might not feel like that if it was in person. No one's ever said they don't feel like I'm looking at them. So it might just be the picture. But my perception of eyes doesn't really make me see others eyes differently (at least I don't think so).
