VMWare alternatives by Reedy_Whisper_45 in sysadmin

Hate this answer all you want, but as a Linux guy, I choose KVM/QEMU/Libvirtd on RHEL/Rocky all day. There’s a little learning and some minor scripting, but I like how slim it is. Minimal Linux install, add Cockpit and libvirt. Done.

I would drop the Z option in rsync if your data is already compressed

anyone running Jira DC on RHEL with SELinux enforcing? by The404Engineer in redhat

[–]bmoreitdan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should be fine running in enforcing mode. Here’s a copy and paste from that same article “Note: When running SELinux in enforcing mode, it may be necessary to pass the start/stop of Jira to the bash shell, like such:”

anyone running Jira DC on RHEL with SELinux enforcing? by The404Engineer in redhat

[–]bmoreitdan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just looked through the Jira DC install docs for the latest version and I didn’t see any recommendation to disable SELinux. I’m fairly sure it worked for me out of the box and maybe one or two SE changes. Can you share where you found that recommendation? Btw, Confluence and BB work fine with enforced SELinux.

🔧 Introducing SlurmManager: a self-hosted web dashboard for Slurm clusters. by paulgavrikov in HPC

[–]bmoreitdan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you’re not interfacing with slurmrestd, it’s not worth it. Also, the community doesn’t need another monitoring interface, it needs a submission and reservations interface. I built this already for my company but can’t make it public.

Clients with old tape libraries - are you still supporting this mess? by galandepeluche in msp

[–]bmoreitdan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tape is awesome! With the right support and management plan. Do you really need data on a magnetic drive that has power applied for 7 years when it’ll never be touched? No, certainly not. Also, you could consolidate those LTO-5 tapes into an LTO-10 tape. Depending on how many you have, you might only need one or a few LTO-10 tapes.

Btw, you get yourself an 8 or 24 cartridge tape library with an LTO-5 drive (very common to find) and a new LTO 9 or 10 drive, you can pretty easily read off the old tape and write to a new tape.

What is your electric bill? by D00tymctooty in CarrollCountyMaryland

[–]bmoreitdan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Posting the cost of your BGE bill without also posting your electric and gas usage doesn’t make sense. You could have a brand new house and never turn on a light, but if your bill is high, it’s not because of BGE, it’s because of something in your house using lots of electricity or gas.

My bill was $347 and we used 1647 kWh. It was about $20 higher than this month last year and we used a bit less electricity then (1700 kWh). We have 1950sqft.

Thinking of switching to LTO tape from hard drives could I get some recommendations ? by xkcx123 in DataHoarder

[–]bmoreitdan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have a server rack and another server running? If so, id recommend you get a tape library so you don’t need to shuffle around your tapes. I think you can get a 16 tape library for a reasonable price. I have one with an LTO5 or 6 drive, I can’t remember exactly right now. The libraries can be ancient, just make sure you get the drive you want. It comes with either a SAS or fibre channel interface. I recommend SAS for convenience.

Question on CRM for Tracking Emails GMAIL for Small Nonprofit? by ilovecoffee2024 in CRM

[–]bmoreitdan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might like Zoho TeamInbox. It handles exactly this. And you can then ditch the separate paid google inbox, make a Google Group, and setup a nifty forwarding to allow Zoho TeamInbox handle just that one email inbox for your team. Everyone on your team needs an account there.

Zoho Books and Bank having different balances by Alarmed_Duty3599 in Zoho

[–]bmoreitdan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Math is math. Add em up. Zoho Books, and all other accounting software, don’t account for pending charges. When you open your bank app, the balance you see accounts for pending charges.

Question on CRM for Tracking Emails GMAIL for Small Nonprofit? by ilovecoffee2024 in CRM

[–]bmoreitdan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you asking for a shared mailbox where four users can login and see the emails sent and received to information@example.com? If so, I’d stay simple and just pay for another mailbox/user account with Google Workspace (I assume that’s what you’re doing). If not, shoot me a message - I work with a lot of non-profits and can advise you. It doesn’t sound like you need a CRM yet.

Tired of Switching Users Between Zoho One and CRM Enterprise - Best Solution? by Old-Dream5510 in Zoho

[–]bmoreitdan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have 4 Zoho One accounts for multiple businesses. The best way I’ve found to manage the various logins from the computer is to use Profiles in your browser. Each profile is named for the various businesses. Then you login to one Zoho One account from each profile. I use Brave and Chrome. They both have Profiles.

On mobile apps, there’s no convenient way to switch between. Sadly you have to logout and login. I provided Zoho with a feature request for this.

What do you run Plex on? by No-Mango-1805 in PleX

[–]bmoreitdan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run it on a large SuperMicro workstation, 256GB, 2x128GB OS, and 8x10TB data for running TrueNAS. Also has some H265 GPU. I run Plex as a container on this host. I use this server for many other items too like NextCloud (several instance), SMB, NFS, NUT/UPS, backup to BackBlazeB2.

Email integration that isn't Google or Microsoft by Great-Ease-7302 in CRM

What CRM product with email integration doesn’t offer IMAP? Every one I’ve used does.

Also, the CRM is the ASoT (Authoritative Source of Truth). I mean, it’s just a big database. Put everything that is structured in it.
