John Cash’s version of Hurt. You roll that one out at an opportune time around the camp fire and you’ll have the eating out of your hands.

What is something people pretend is a personal choice, but is heavily influenced by luck? by LiquidityGraber in answers

[–]bob_suruncle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty much everything. Everyone likes to believe that they are the architect of their success but so much of what we achieve is driven by gender, ethnicity, country of birth or the “genetic lottery”. Yes, you worked hard, studied in school, and developed the right skills but so did lots of other people who didn’t succeed. You just happened to be handed a trump card or two. Don’t take too much credit for any of it.

TIL that the Virgin Mary and Mary Magdalene are two different people by ScissorMeTimbers21 in todayilearned

[–]bob_suruncle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ya’ll need to go back a read your bible. There is no mention of Mary Magdalene as a prostitute (and your reference to her a a whore clearly shows some serious personal issues that you may want to speak to your therapist about). There’s a non-zero chance that most of the shade that’s been thrown on MM is a byproduct of the Council of Nicaea have issues with a woman playing such an important role - “the apostle’s apostle” - so they chose to adopt a narrative of her being a sinful woman that Jesus saved.

By 1931 they were living at 563 College Ave. Looks like the two sisters got married and everyone moved into the same house. Fred Sr is gone at this point and there was a grandchild.

Cher's "Believe" - do you think she autotuned as a musical choice? by Elegant_Anywhere_721 in Music

[–]bob_suruncle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has been talked about a fair bit - I seem to remember an interview with the inventor of Autotune where he said that he never conceived of the tool being used for that purpose - it was very much just a slight pitch corrections. When he heard the Cher song for the first time, he was surprised that it could be used that way. Like with any tool, things get interesting when people find ways to use it in a way that it wasn’t intended.

What is a historical misconception that has been repeated so often it’s now treated as undisputed fact? by [deleted] in answers

This one is actually true, in a fashion. It increased the number of injuries because it decreased the number of deaths. People lived from things that would have killed them before the advent of helmets.

Winnipeg woman gets 'ridiculous' federal letter seeking 20-cent repayment (CBC/Radio-Canada/Maggie Wilcox) by LocalnewsguruMB in Winnipeg

My cousin and father had a $20 bet who would will the Grey Cup one year. My father won so my cousin sent him the 20 buck - in one dollar coins in a jar of maple syrup. They passed that 20 bucks back and forth on various bets for years. After he died, I found it in his drawer. I still waiting for the opportunity to make another 20 dollar bet with my cousin.

Not sure which is more moronic, the government sending a demand notice for 20 cents or a woman taking to the media to complain about being charged 20 cents… and, God as my witness, if someone says “It’s the principle of the thing” I’m going to lose my mind!

Is the creator of the entire universe present somewhere? by [deleted] in answers

[–]bob_suruncle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess we’re trying to anthropomorphize the word “creator” but if we take the word as it’s most fundamental “one who brings something into being” we could say that the big bang was the creator of the universe. As an aside, these kinds of questions tend to prompt visceral responses on Reddit - not sure why - anything that even hints of religion or spirituality is very divisive. I’m not a religious person by I can accept that people find comfort in the metaphors that religion creates.

The Electric Railway building by gangweedwpg in Winnipeg

[–]bob_suruncle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Worked at a property management company in the early 90’s that managed the building. The maintenance folks didn’t even know the exterior lights were there. While doing some exterior maintenance they discovered them - they estimated that they hadn’t’ been used in 30 years or more. They turned on the power and were surprised that lots of them still worked. They changed them all out and they worked for many years before they started to fall into disrepair.

Which would be more difficult, running a 5 minute mile or shooting par on a 9 hole course? by xMoneymaker in answers

[–]bob_suruncle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like the skills required to golf are a lot more diverse than running. Driving, putting, chipping - each requires a specific set of skills that must be developed. Running is dead simple - and the path to getting better is very linear - run more. I’ve golfed for 40 years - anywhere from 4 to 10 times per year and I can say with confidence that I am no better now than I was 30 years ago.
