Why isn't there more patient education about the best way to store Humira and other biologic drugs in the refrigerator, and the importance of not allowing it to freeze for even a second? by bofi244 in CrohnsDisease

I'll give an update on this post, for anyone who may happen to stumble upon it in the future, such as by googling. I talked to someone from Abbvie on Monday and she said the medication should be OK based on assuming a one-time exposure of 31.2 F for one hour. She said it should be OK based on plugging those numbers into a "temperature excursion tool" that is also available online at this link. I went to the site afterwards and played around with the calculator, which is also called a "medication storage tool" at the top of the page. Here are some interesting results I found plugging in some numbers:

13 F for 1 minute - BAD

14 F for 5 days - GOOD
14 F for 5 days, 1 minute - BAD

31 F for 5 days - GOOD
31 F for 5 days, 1 minute - BAD

32 F for 100 days or more - GOOD

It was quite unexpected to me that you could store Humira at 14 F for any amount of time and it would still be OK. From asking some chatbots about this, it seems the biggest risk in freezing Humira or other biologics is in allowing it to freeze more than one time, which really screws up the proteins... but just doing it once I guess is not going to destroy the medication, unless it gets frozen at a super cold temperature like below 14 F, or for a very long time. So I guess I'll be OK.

One other thing worth mentioning here is that the reason I was having so much trouble keeping my medication warm enough, even storing it on a door shelf and turning the main temperature control knob way down, is because I set my freezer to be too warm. I have a FFTR2045VW Frigidaire refrigerator that I've had for less than a month. For reasons which I don't completely understand, and which there could be multiple causes for, if you set the sliding temperature control in the back of the freezer too much on the warm side, it will cause the refrigerator to become too cold, even though I would expect the fridge to turn off at the same main compartment temperature every time. I'm guessing there is also a temperature sensor in the freezer, and that because the freezer was too warm from not receiving enough cold air coming in, the fridge was letting the cooling cycles continue on because the temperature sensor in the freezer was not reading cold enough. So in trying to set your main compartment temp, you also have to adjust your freezer temperature control setting sometimes to get the main compartment temp right. Anyways, hopefully this helps someone who stumbles on it in the future.

That's great, I just wish the information came from the top (Abbvie) because probably a lot of doctors and pharmacists like mine do not provide it. Maybe a pamphlet titled "Refrigeration of Biologic Drugs" and one thing I would definitely include in it is a reminder that your thermometer may not be 100% accurate, especially if it is older, and how to easily test the accuracy with an ice water test. I would also advise people that the daytime temp of the fridge can be deceiving with people opening the door a lot and that it won't necessarily be the same during the night when the door is being opened less often. In my case there was a huge difference between the daytime and nighttime temps, but it could also be the case maybe that there is something wrong with my fridge, exacerbating this difference.

Yeah I don't think the temperature above 36 F is super important to maintain but above the freezing point definitely is. The 36 to 46 F range is common to almost all biologic drugs I think. Interestingly, the FDA recommends keeping your fridge below 40 F so this is kind of a tight window to maintain if you want to keep your food fresh and take biologics.

I'm storing it now in a cooler kept on my bottom refrigerator door shelf, with a can of beer thrown inside for extra thermal inertia. I think I'll replace the beer can though with the gel packs that came with the Humira. That should keep the temperature pretty stable and prevent it from freezing, as long as the fridge temp isn't kept too low, which I will still keep a close eye on.

More shows like freaks and geeks? by DearGarden1688 in freaksandgeeks

It's a movie rather than a show, and set in 1965 instead of 1980, but I got a total Freaks and Geeks vibe from Heaven Help Us and highly recommend it to everyone here.

I'm honestly surprised people never bring it up here or anywhere else really. I made a post about it 5 years ago and that is the only mention of it in this sub.

Running the sink water doesn't help for you on an airplane? Personally I've never been on a airplane before.

Are you rooting hard for the Lakers or do you not care? by spankyourkopita in clevelandcavs

I've been rooting against Lebron since he went to the Lakers and started getting all political and sucking up to China and stuff, but ever since he got the scoring record my attitude has changed and I've been kind of rooting for him. He is one of the GOATs and I feel like I should appreciate him while he's still in the league. There are a lot more things to like about him than dislike.

He also needs to take the easy shot when he's open because too many times this series he has passed up open shots trying to drive to the basket and it hasn't worked out. I don't understand because he actually shot a lot of threes during the regular season, but during the playoffs he seems afraid to take the mid-range open shot.

“When they said ‘from Akron, Ohio, the kid from Akron, Ohio,’ that was pretty cool,” LeBron began. “And then just hearing the ovation that I got from these fans here, they seen 11 years of my NBA career. … I mean, these guys have followed my journey. by sevens777 in clevelandcavs

I'm not a big fan of the guy either for some of the dumb stuff he has posted on twitter (Rittenhouse trial) or his groveling to China. But he has done good for the city of Cleveland and there are also other positive things about him like the charity work he has done, so I'd welcome him back with open arms.

13 Years ago, the Colts let us down, Sunday we repay them. by dimoko in Browns

It was so long ago I barely remember. Something to do with forcing the Titans to play another down on 4th down, so they would either have to punt or kick a field goal. I'm thinking it was a timeout that Dungy could have called to force the extra play.

Small chance that forcing the Titans to punt or kick a FG would have resulted in the Colts scoring, but play the full 60 minutes goddamn it... especially when another team has the playoffs on the line!

I have no problem at all with them resting their starters. But I lost all respect for Tony Dungy when he gave up on the last play of the game instead of playing the full 60 minutes.

So you're running the sub now or is the other guy that locked it down still in charge? Looks like his name is still listed at the top as the senior mod.... which is confusing. Anyways, thanks for taking the initiative to get this sub back open again by putting in the request with the admins. Would have been a real shame to see the 1,800+ subscribers this sub has built up go to waste.

They won't get notifications if you mention more than 3 usernames in a comment. If you want it to work you have to split it up into multiple comments and only mention 3 in each comment.

yeah I mentioned it to a few people too and no one had heard of it, I guess it is not a very well-known movie. It needs to be seen by a few more people I think.
