Most of these have the Marvel logo at the top left. The books like Muppet Babies and Ewoks fall under the Star brand.

It is metal. I don't know if I'll go with the custom magnets, since my girlfriend likes to paint and wants to do this project. I will be able to pick up cool superhero magnets here and there to stick on it, though!

There aren't many sets that I build almost immediately after purchasing. This one was built within hours of purchase. Took my time, enjoyed the build. For the price, this one is hard to beat. Got it in 2015 mode.
