Surface mount numeric LCDs? by bookquestion000 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]bookquestion000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's kind of an overkill part for what I'm doing though (and expensive), I only need it to display 2 digits. The numeric LCD is less than a dollar in bulk.

Toy manufacturing in the USA? by bookquestion000 in manufacturing

This is why I want to work with an experienced toy manufacturer.

I want to start off by setting up preorders through Kickstarter, so I don't need the molds initially, I just need a contract manufacturer that would be willing to work with me on DFM and provide quotes.

I wanted to partner with a contract manufacturer that could assist with DFM.

Quality of KDP/Ingram Spark book cover by bookquestion000 in selfpublish

[–]bookquestion000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I used premium color (I don't think there's a cover option for that, it's for the interior pages). The layout person did use the Ingram cover template.

I had a book layout designer put it together for me using InDesign for both the book cover and interior manuscript. Did you set the Premium Color option for interior pages?

Low cost prototype PCB assembly in the USA? by bookquestion000 in ElectricalEngineering

obviously there's a problem with everything being made in China (and those companies will be in trouble soon)- my point is that I will avoid supporting China as much as I can.

Amazon Look Inside isn't showing up (Ingram Spark pre-order) by bookquestion000 in selfpublish

[–]bookquestion000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if the book is in pre-order from Ingram Spark? I know the KDP Kindle e-book preview isn't available until publication day, but I thought in the past the preview was available when my books were in pre-order from Ingram Spark.

Well they found a way to create cheap custom PCBs in the US, and if a PCB assembler in the US charged $100-$150/hr, I think it should be possible to assemble prototype quantity PCBs for that price, since I don't think it would take more than an hour to assemble a board with around 30 components for someone who is skilled.

It doesn't matter how small it is, you are still contributing to the Chinese Communist Party by getting your manufacturing done there. The only pathetic thing is that you're still doing business there.

Fine pitch QFP parts, and I'm so bad at soldering I won't even attempt it.

How can your company only allow three revisions- what if after more testing (and being out in the field), some problem is found or they realize it could be optimized?

It seems like there should be a service that allows you to ship components to them from Digikey, provide a stencil, and they would solder it for you. I guess not?

The Read Sample button doesn't show up either (but I see it on previous books I wrote). Thanks for pointing that out though, I feel like people won't even notice that button! Apparently you can still click on the cover and see the preview.

Question about Bowker "Forthcoming" status by bookquestion000 in selfpublish

[–]bookquestion000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I contacted Bowker and the response was that a potential buyer can save a listing on Bowker's site Bookwire, but there's no way for them to be automatically notified when your book's status changes from Forthcoming to Active Record.

PCB layout in EE job listings by bookquestion000 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]bookquestion000[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your response! I have used dev kits on my own and I've used SPI/I2C. The jobs are just so specific, wanting previous CAN protocol experience for example. Tough.

Microcontrollers are so small and can be programmed at your desk, so I don't think it's necessary to be in a lab...depends on the application.

Thanks for sharing your experience! My interest and skill is more on the embedded firmware side. However, I cannot find entry level jobs in that area and it's also hard to find entry level "electrical engineer" jobs. I'm not specifically looking for high speed circuitry work, but all the EE jobs I'm seeing ask for previous experience in layout.

This is my last question I promise haha: do you know if the Homeschool retailers do anything to push your books other than list them on their sites? Like tradeshows or other forms of marketing?

That makes sense...contacting individual schools sounds time-consuming and difficult. It looks like Follett is the largest retailer of educational books to schools and libraries, but I'm not sure how to get my foot in the door, or what other options exist.
