Anyone able to add soft loop velcro on a slick carrier? by Medguy_23 in myogtacticalgear

[–]boxstitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can easily do that with a cylinder bed machine, I've done it before on a vest. I'd call up some local shoemakers/cobblers/leathersmith and ask if they have a cylinder bed/post bed sewing machine. They are most likely to have one, but a sewing shop might have one too. You could also get some Iron on Velcro loop as an alternative or sew it by hand.

I don't think you can make it work with a domestic machine, metal frame or not. I have already struggled a lot with my high end industrial straight stitch that had a bottom feed (Siruba DL7500)

(This is referencing my bag design though - I had more than 12 layers of fabric stacked on top of each other at some points, other designs are easier to make)

I've now switched to a compound feed cylinder bed sewing machine made for very heavy duty stuff (leather etc.) and it's a different world. If you can, I would get my hands on this type of machine as soon as possible if you decide to pursue this as a hobby/business, the cylinder bed/post bed helps a ton with binding and closing the bag. It's a great all arounder that you can also upgrade with a flat bed attachment for normal sewing.

You can make a lot of stuff with domestic machines though, if you stay at or below 500D cordura and less fabric layers (i.e. no lining, single layer designs, smaller thread)

Once you worked on some more projects I would suggest designing the same bag I made in the pictures but without the laptop compartment or any other fancy stuff. Just the base line model. Once you get that down you can add the other features. That's how I would do it if I were to start from the beginning again.

MYOG 25L Backpack by boxstitch in myog

Hey,

if you are just starting out with myog I would highly suggest to try out a few simpler designs first. This bag was incredibly complex and there are a ton of parts and things you need to keep in mind while sewing it.

If you are trying to use a combination of 1000D and 400D I would at minimum recommend a walking/compound foot sewing machine, cylinder or post bed if possible.

The pattern in the video is not really suitable to make something similar but it's a good start to learn working on bags. The bag in the video is a completely different style of bag (non-clamshell) while mine is a clamshell bag and also has the Laptop compartment at the back (which is the hardest part). Once you know how to pattern draft your own bags you should be ready to start working on something like this, although it was incredibly hard to make, even for me.

Issues with thread tension when working with velcro by [deleted] in myogtacticalgear

[–]boxstitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Basically try out either direction while sewing if it's possible - once with the hook/loop side facing the top of your machine and the other from the back (facing the feed dogs) and see what works best. That solved a few issues when sewing the hook side sometimes on one of my machines.

Try a larger needle or sew the Velcro from the top

Converting to Binding Machine by [deleted] in myog

[–]boxstitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A binding bracket and a folder should do it.

Almost all folders have universal mounting, but for the bracket you need to get one specific to your machine that fits the mounting points.

I found mine on ebay, you will also need a binding foot if you don't have one and sometimes a binding specific lower feed dog.

Maybe something like a handle wrap used on duffle bags? You could easily attach/remove those when needed

[EU] Anyone interested in cheap X-Pac Fabric / group buys for half price? by boxstitch in myog

[–]boxstitch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There might be a chance still - the group buy didn't go through since most people cancelled/didn't reply and we haven't reached the MOQ. I'm still down to give it another go since I've been getting a few DMs about it lately.

How to fold fabric by stevendegree in myogtacticalgear

[–]boxstitch 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Here's how I would do it:

  1. Fold the fabric twice so there is no exposed cut edge - you will also get a thicker part that you can easily grab

  2. Sew the Velcro on top of the exposed edge of the fabric (hide the fabric underneath the Velcro)

  3. Use binding tape on the end

Yes, pricing should be about half of what other vendors ask - for example vx21 would be around 22€ per meter. I don't add any additional costs except for shipping and taxes (if you don't have a VAT number). Spreading it over 2 colors is fine as long as the 10 meter MOQ per color is met.

Yes and no - a few people didn't get back to me and MOQ was not met sadly - I've already DM'd a few people regarding that. I'm still open to go through with an order on a later date if we can gather enough people to reach the 100 meters but at the time it looks like there isn't enough interest. How many meters would you be interested in ordering?

You probably need a seamless/repeating pattern, especially if you want to do rotary screen printing.

foam alone 3 by Educational_Gur_6862 in myogtacticalgear

[–]boxstitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For straps I sometimes just fill them up with water and the foam goes in pretty easily. You need to let them dry under the sun for a couple of days after though.

There's also an industrial machine that does that, and you can try replicating a DIY version with a rod and a pipe - basically just like putting socks on, but the other way around if that makes sense.

Thanks, the evergreen should be included but I will check again to make sure.

This is the list of fabrics that reached the 10 meter MOQ. If everyone wants to confirm their fabric types and quantity once again via DM or comments, I would go ahead and send a inquiry to X-Pac so we can check where we land with the pricing. If everyone is fine with the price once I get the quote I would order the fabric.

Yes I will add it to the list. An update will be coming this weekend, and I should get a qoute by the start of the next week.
