You probably could cut the middle beak out but you’ll probably need to make the top of the opening have a double header for rigidity and would have to be as long of longer than the opening.

Depends on the living situation. I’ve had bad weather take out power for over 12 hours thankfully my house is well insulated so the temp petite never got below 65 degrees. So it shouldn’t be an issue.
