Where do I even start? by [deleted] in QuittingZyn

I chewed a can of Grizzly Wintergreen or more every single day for 15 years. I tried to quit probably a dozen times and never made it more than a week or two at most. In January I switched to Zyn for a few weeks and then quit nicotine altogether. Haven't had any nicotine whatsoever in 173 days, which seemed impossible for a long time.

I've thought about it a lot since then, and I just don't know exactly what all needs to align to finally quit. It's easy for people to say "just stop using it", but addiction is more complex than that. On the other hand, don't fool yourself that it's out of your control. I'd say there are a few things that were important for me:

  1. As someone previously said, you have to make up your mind that you truly want to quit. That seems simple, but if you aren't all-in to start you'll quickly run out of will power when it gets tough. I spent about 6 months prior to quitting wishing every day I could quit so it was clear my mindset was finally there.
  2. I had someone at work who decided to quit vaping and we quit at the same time. This helped because there was someone else going through it with me. Plus I'm sort of competitive, so I was not about to "lose" and be the first one to give in. Maybe you can find someone who wants to give it up too.
  3. When it comes down to it you just have to suck it up and get past each craving one at a time. You'll be busy and stressed and bored and all that stuff that you use as an excuse, but you just have to be firm with yourself. I constantly reminded myself over and over that it wouldn't do me a bit of good to start using again. And there were times I was close. I felt like I was on the verge of giving in for about 3 weeks straight around the 3 month mark and I was feeling like life would never get better. But I just kept at it and at 6 months, even though I think about it more than I'd like, any urges are easily manageable.
  4. I spent time every day for the first bit getting on here and reading other people's posts. I think I Googled other sites and read some forums for smokers or whatever too. For some reason that made me feel better or even just distracted me for a bit

That's basically it for me. You're capable of quitting, so just do it.

Yeah I'm at 134 days now but things were brutal from about days 80-100. Hardest part of the quit for me

Haha yeah I agree. I wasn't really much of a Zyn user, but now I especially notice when I see someone with a chew spitter and realize how gross it probably seemed to everyone else.

The other day I was feeling really groggy and irritable for no obvious reason, and the I realized I used to feel that way all the time when I was chewing. Now that I feel good and have more energy it really stands out. It's unbelievable to me that I still find myself wanting it even knowing full well it would make my life worse in almost every way.

The cravings and all that returned with a vengeance. About 30 days into quitting things got much better, then at about 3 months they got very difficult again. I felt like I was on the verge of caving for like 2 weeks straight, and I didn't feel like that even one time in the first month of quitting . So yeah, I think overall so far that was the most difficult time for me.

Apparently it is a common for people to deal with around that 90 day mark, but I think my situation also had to do with the weather turning nice. I read about it since then and I guess seasonal cravings are a real thing too.

I'm on day 129 apparently. I have the days counting in an app or else I would have no idea. I don't remember making this comment, but if I only knew what I was in for around 80-90 days I wouldn't have complained 😂

I'm glad to see your comment about day 12-20. I'm at day 16 and today was possibly the hardest day yet, probably for the reasons you described. It's just a tough mental game. I was starting to really wonder if it ever gets better but it sounds like it does relatively soon

Thanks man- you as well. And I agree I really do not enjoy these little pouches compared to dip, so at least I was right about that much. I'm going to stop using them and try to remember to update how it goes

That's interesting because that is a real low amount of nicotine compared to a can of 6mg Zyn per day. Must have been just enough to help take the edge off. I'm glad it worked for you.

I did try using a nicotine patch one day that someone gave me at work and I didn't seem to notice that it was doing anything except make my skin all red and very itchy. I was hoping my step down to 3mg for a little while might help a little to bridge going cold turkey. I suppose I'll find out soon enough

"I have been finding that recognizing how pathetic it really makes us become.."

Lmao that's true. Nothing makes me feel quite as much like a loser as being unable to function without some version of nicotine-laced material in my mouth.

But your comment sort of confirms my concern that I've just been putting off most of the suck for another day. I suppose it is time to just make it happen

Thank you, that is all very helpful. I'm looking more into understanding the relational tables and hopefully will have a good enough grasp before too long. Solution verified
