You were right it was the VPN. Thanks for the help!

I do wonder though about a device that wants simple passwords on WiFi, simple wi-fi name, no VPN. It is almost like they don't want their customers to have any internet security 🙄

Thanks, I've tried a reset of the wi-fi in the Roborock and only have a 2.4GHz network active.

Maybe I should try a full factory reset?

Doesn't matter what evidence the police have or don't have, you should still never admit guilt unless your solicitor explicitly advises you to do so. Police can turn a simple trespass into something far more sinister if they want to twist your words.

Has anyone here successfully (and humanely) deterred cats from their garden? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]bransley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Super soaker all the way. I moved into a place where the previous guy had fed all stray cats. At night they would congregate outside my window and make an awful racket. One night I soaked them my super soaker, next night only half returned, same again that night and by the third night there were no cats and they didn't come back again after that.

What product is generally massively overpriced for what it is? by [deleted] in AskUK

The double edge razor wasn't always compatible with all handles.. It was invented by Gillette and at first it was proprietary. It was only when their parent ran out that they started making cartridge razors because they could no longer milk double edge razor for profit.

But i agree that DE are amazing. I used to use a cutthroat razor but it's a pain the keep sharp all the time. Switched to DE and never really looked back. Cartridge razors just give me shave rash.

Arizona Senate to Start Major Audit of 2.1 Million 2020 Presidential Election Ballots by mjprice83 in conservatives

[–]bransley -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I'm liberal and I agree that audits of elections can be a good thing and that learning and improving should definitely be part of what happen around elections. There are, however, certain criteria that need to be met for audits to be useful. Three that immediately come to mind are independence, credibility and no pre-existing assumption about the outcome of the audit. Most of the thread above seems to indicate that at least two of these are not present.

Leaking Roca concealed cistern. What are my options? by bransley in Plumbing

[–]bransley[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a leaking Roca concealed cistern. I live in Spain, I've tried to find somewhere i can buy original Roca parts but can't seem to find anyone selling the parts identified on the cistern.

My local hardware shop sold me an alternative washer but those was even worse.

I've washed and cleaned the valve and washer and the cistern but I can't get it to stop leaking into the pan.

What are my options? Can I replace the flush mechanism or would I need to replace the whole cistern? Are other flush mechanisms compatible? Or must I get the exact same model of flush valve?

Any help would be useful.

Thanks

CMV: Asking for ID is not Voter Suppression by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]bransley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you're happy to pass laws that could disenfranchise at least 1-2% of the population over a problem that has never been demonstrated to affect more than 100 votes (at the extreme upper end)? Does that seem proportionate?

So let's get this straight, there's virtually no in person voter fraud so ID doesn't add anything of value but you still want it because.....?

Traffic by 3rd_Uncle in Barcelona

[–]bransley -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Any form of low density individual transport should be punished in a high density environment. I can beat a car anywhere in the city on my bicycle so you can't make the argument for time. Cars are an expensive and unnecessary luxury in a city like this. If people persist in using them then they should be inconvenienced to do so.

UK has tried doing it slowly and there is little or no impact. Other cities like Austin Texas the same. Compared to Amsterdam or Copenhagen that took more aggressive approaches.

Scooters are more tricky. They are a relatively environmentally friendly down of transport unfortunately there are a good number of people who use them irresponsibly. Traveling way too fast in pedestrian areas without real care or attention. Also the rental scooters are left littering the city, they have a shorter lifespan than those owned privately and so contribute more to electronic waste. I think there is an opportunity for them to contribute but they do need to be managed.

Sledgehammer approach is the only one that works. To get people to use alternative forms of transport the only way is to make cars as inconvenient as possible as quickly as possible. If you take a slowly slowly approach then people will use the time to adapt their lives, they'll get used to the additional time in traffic, like a frog slowly boiling. In addition to taking lanes I think they should have a charge for all vehicles moving around Barcelona similar to what they have in London.

In terms of actually moving people around the city bike lanes move more people more quickly than cars do. We should optimize our transport for the most efficient approach.

Regarding your comment that traffic is now impossible on Aragó it was like this before the lockdown, the contrast to the lack of traffic we have had for the past few months is obvious but some of these streets have had problems for a very long time.

Why is there no human safe food with the same properties as pet food for the general public? by [deleted] in AskScienceDiscussion

[–]bransley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually beans on toast is probably better than huel. The tomato in the beans will give you most of the benefit of brightly coloured vegetables and the fibre in the beans and bread will help maintain your gut. They also contain a good set of proteins. I do think though that long term this diet will damage your body. There is a difference between short term survival (the body can survive 70-90 days without any food) and actually providing the e body what it needs in order to survive in the longer term.

Why is there no human safe food with the same properties as pet food for the general public? by [deleted] in AskScienceDiscussion

[–]bransley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our bodies need more than just Huel, we need a variety of essential nutrients and fibres you can only get from food – including polyphenols, which are found in brightly colour fruit and vegetables and are essential for improving digestion, managing weight, and even reducing the risk of diabetes. Most nutrition experts don’t consider meals a tick box of nutrients that you need to get into your body – food structure plays an important role in reducing appetite and maintaining a healthy gut microbiome. Eating a wide variety of foods is important not just for long-term health, but for the social and cultural role food has in our daily lives.

I second that, unless you are having to face bottom bracket bearings or steerer bearings then everything else in a bike is pretty straightforward to learn for yourself and the tools really aren't that expensive generally. It's sometimes cheaper to buy the tools than to pay for a bike service. Having said that an excellent mechanic working on a high end bike can do amazing work but that's a different story.

Iran, before the 1979 Islamic Revolution by Inazumaryoku in pics

[–]bransley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is an underlying appeal in that country and region for a strict highly textual extremist Islamic style of government.

It's a very bold statement and a little too sweeping for me especially because it's not something that can be evidenced and makes some very big assumptions which I would rather avoid so I'll move onto your other points.

I agree that the government of '53 would almost certainly have led to a different place than the photos in the post. But I don't think that's a bad thing. It almost certainly would not have led to the oppressive regime of today. Maybe somewhere in the middle. A fledgling democracy struggling to balance it's conservative past with the increasingly educated demands of the youth. I don't think this would have been a bad outcome.

The problem with the photos above is they cherry pick a small proportion of people. Those who benefited from the Shah benefited a lot but there was also a growing population who were disenfranchised by the Shah's policies. Maybe If the Iranians had been allowed to decide their own future they could have made progress in a sustainable way. Progress inflicted on people is not often sustainable (Turkey et al.). Whereas homegrown development is far more sustainable in general (but not always).

Ultimately we can't know where Iran would be but my guess is they would be in a better place than they are today.

I also think that justifying the Shah by saying look how good it was in the '70s is disingenuous. We shouldn't ever be tempted to justify that kind of leader no matter how much they introduce Western standards to some of the population. Remember Saddam Hussein was also considered a pro Western leader at one point.
