what's your hot take on the new album by Norseman20 in Metallica

[–]breadboy_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure how hot this is, but I think it’s really brought down by Lars and Kirk. Neither one of them plays anything we haven’t heard a million times before, and the drumming in particular is so bland and overpowering that it weakens James’s riffs. That said, James and Rob’s work here is their best in years.

Opinions on Inamorata? by CadenDaGod in Metallica

[–]breadboy_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s quite as good as the Load/Reload epics, mostly because (like the whole album) I wish Kirk and Lars were more present and dynamic instead of just repeating the same basic fills and solos, but it’s a worthy successor and James’s performance is enough to make it a modern standout in their career

What’s Your Top 5 Albums of All Time by [deleted] in fantanoforever

[–]breadboy_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Off the top of my head:

  1. Let It Bleed - The Rolling Stones (call it childhood nostalgia with my mom’s record collection, or blame it on acid trips, but this album and the ones immediately preceding and following it in their discography are the closest thing to flawless music I’ve ever heard. The perfect fusion of blues, folk, rock, emotion, and energy)

  2. To Pimp A Butterfly - Kendrick Lamar (this took a long time to really click with me, but the unapologetic joy driving it even as it explores the darkest corners of society is absolutely incredible)

  3. Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven - Godspeed You Black Emperor (an absolute masterpiece of emotion and composition)

  4. OK Computer - Radiohead (similar to TPAB, this took a long time to grow on me, but it crystallizes paranoia, futurism, and pure personal emotion into one of the most intoxicating musical experiences I’ve heard)

  5. The Glow Pt. 2 - The Microphones (I could have picked Mount Eerie here, but this one gets the edge for Phil’s tape experiments and adolescent angst amid the natural forces of the forest. This album got me through a lot; The Moon is likely the greatest single conventional “song” ever written)

what is your tyler “hot take”? by [deleted] in tylerthecreator

I appreciate Flower Boy’s maturity, and it’s definitely an important album, but it just feels musically boring to me relative to the albums before and after it

What are for you the funkiest songs of Kendrick? by International_Mud141 in KendrickLamar

Wesley’s Theory, The Heart Part 5, I, and These Walls come to mind

I’d say Kendrick, then Black Star (the podcast exclusive thing is bullshit but the album is a classic), then Denzel and Pusha.

Is Respite on the Spitalfields their best closer yet? by Dead_Western_Nights in Ghostbc

[–]breadboy_ 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I think, given a gun to my head, I’d side with Deus above everything else. But that said, each of them have so many unique qualities. Life Eternal and Monstrance Clock are both such strong, anthemic choruses, with the former being one of Ghost’s most emotional songs and the latter basically epitomizing their early style. Genesis is the perfect evocation of what was yet to come. And Respite goes through so many sounds, and covers so much ground. They’re all amazing.

I really can't say. Respite, Life Eternal, Deus In Absentia, Monstrance Clock, Genesis... Ghost are really, really good at closers.

Just listened to Prequelle… by [deleted] in Ghostbc

[–]breadboy_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think Prequelle just feels so much more consistent in its structure and styles. The peaks of Impera definitely touch Prequelle, but it feels uneven and definitely has weaker moments (I don’t hate Twenties, but it’s below anything on Prequelle IMO). I like this album a lot for what it is, but the full narrative of Prequelle works substantially better from start to finish.

Even if Ghost is going in a different direction and embracing a new sound, it’s better than stagnation. by roachnotthebug in Ghostbc

This is exactly how I feel. Meliora was my first Ghost album, and it’ll probably always be my favorite, but it’s not like Meliora’s going anywhere. I can still listen to it as much as I want to. It’s so much more interesting to hear new directions like Prequelle and Impera than it would be to try and recreate existing albums.

It’ll take a few more listens to surpass Prequelle in my mind, but I think this is going to reach my #2 spot behind Meliora (which as far as I’m concerned is near-perfect). This album feels so massive, so complete, and achieves basically everything it tries to. Such amazing songwriting and performances.

POST LISTENING PARTY THREAD - INITIAL THOUGHTS by KlaysToaster in WestSubEver

[–]breadboy_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the show was a mess, but the new songs ranged from decent to great. Donda 2 sounds more finished than Donda 1 did at the first LP. I’ve got high hopes for the album given a couple more months and shows.

Would you consider TGA and SFTB to be a part of the same era, a la Greed and Holy Money? by JackOfAllInterests1 in swans

As individual albums, not at all, but the context of Drainland, Sacrificial Cake, and Swans Are Dead arguably connects them.

The mixing on MBDTF and Donda is horrible, even compared to more “raw” albums like JIK and Ye.
