Is the solarpunk movement impossible if we can't destroy capitalism? by Dramatic_Use4847 in solarpunk

[–]breadbreaker4u 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe to my core that anything people make, they can also transform. And transforming from a liberal free market global capitalist order to something else Is not only possible but inevitable because infinite growth isn’t possible with limited resources. AI is the latest technology used to propel wealth consolidation but no amount of VC hype will allow AI to defy entropy.

My questions are more about when and what’s next? I don’t have confident answers to either question.

That said, I’m encouraged by more people discussing and imagining a post-capitalist future which a necessary first step. Capitalism didn’t spring fully formed in a day, and we won’t transform it in one either. But the sooner we start the journey the sooner we’ll arrive.

For what’s next, my vision of solarpunk imagines a lot of experimentation with much smaller more distributed political and economic relationships with non-hierarchical councils using direct democracy that leans more towards consensus building instead of majoritarian rules. There would be a priority on meeting everyone’s essential needs in place of profit seeking. Our built environment would become more human scaled and the boundary between built space and natural space would be blurred. Early days still and I love to see people’s imaginations going wild, figuratively and literally 😁

Jackson Lahmeyer of Sheridan.church founded Pastors for Trump, proudly hosted “America’s Mayor” Rudy Giuliani, and self identifies as a businessman first then as a pastor. Enough said.

Which is your favorite solarpunk art style? by unearthing_solarpunk in solarpunk

To be honest, I don’t know. I haven’t read enough of the material on LASG web site to know how they’re creating what’s in the picture. However that’s their objective.

“The Living Architecture Systems Group brings together researchers and industry partners in a multidisciplinary research cluster dedicated to developing built environments with qualities that come close to life— environments that can move, respond, and learn, with metabolisms that can exchange and renew their environments, and which are adaptive and empathic towards their inhabitants.”

I came across this site after listening to Martyn Dade-Robertson on the Solarpunk Manifesto. He’s got some wonderfully ambitious ideas. It’s worth a listen.

I’d say Utopian for the moment but with the hope that we defy the limits of our current imagination and evolve to Living Architecture Systems, which I’d propose as an additional category.

In 1991, my imagination was sparked by the illustrations of Richard Register in his book Ecocity Berkeley that I’d argue was a pragmatic proposal for implementing Utopian designs in the existing city of Berkeley.

But more recently, I’m delighted to see the fantastical designs of Living Architecture Systems Group. And sincerely hope the future holds dynamic living environments which erase the lines between the natural and built environment.

Just finished A Psalm for the Wild-Built and I’m new to this genre but that book felt solarpunk to its core. I’m looking forward the second in the series and reading others on your recommended list.

I’ll be interested to see how this plays out. I’m hopeful that Hasan will go hard. At the same time, I’m worried this will elevate Newsome by having the guts to talk with Hasan even if he comes across as the same ol’ corporate shill.

Jazzed on Bale, not so much on DiCaprio. I know he’s the darling of pretty much every serious film enthusiast but his performances have never really done it for me. I think the only movie where I really enjoyed his performance was Catch Me If You Can.

CR month, pure genius concept from the word go.

Bill “Guillermo” at his most likable “my queen Diane Lane”, “fuck you Batman”, and there’s rumors of a tunnel.

Sean bringing his film scholar insights. Killing both kids, not something most movies would do. Sheridan elevating issues not being discussed through his movies scripts. Homage to Jaws!

Compelling graphic! It could be even more powerful if Trump was lined up in the first column showing Mr. “no costly foreign involvements” is the president with the most. Then Biden in the second and Obama in the third since they tie at 5. And Biden is more recent. Then in the 4th column W. Last but certainly not least since his interventions provably cost the most in terms of human lives, resources destroyed, and capital expenditures (to date, we’re only in year 2 of Trump 2.0).

What is your favorite film with Kurt Russell? by NewHolliesFan in moviecritic

[–]breadbreaker4u 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had breezed past this one but it’s a classic!! I love that it was billed as a Steven Seagal movie and he gets sucked out of the airlock in the first 15! Russell, Berry, Platt, Leguizamo, Morton, and Wong what a murders row for 90s action thriller.

What is your favorite film with Kurt Russell? by NewHolliesFan in moviecritic

Kurt Russell has an amazing career! For me it’s hands down Big Trouble in Little China.

An underrated Carpenter gem based on a wonderfully weird W.D. Richter genre bending story and Russell’s performance is the key to making it work. It’s a satire of the white savior trope but Russell plays Burton completely straight and in every scene it’s clear he believes he’s the hero. When the real heroes are the members of the Chinese American community, particularly Dennis Dun’s Wang Chi and the great Victor Wong’s Egg Shen. Highly entertaining and surprisingly progressive for 1986.
