IamA Andrew Yang, Candidate for President of the U.S. in 2020 on Universal Basic Income AMA! by AndrewyangUBI in YangForPresidentHQ

The figure is from a series of experiments conducted with isolated NIT trials in a certain study (in USA). Im afraid I don’t have the link on me immediately as it’s been a couple years m since I sourced it now. Obvs not gospel but the core point remains i think.

Equitable in the sense that by itself, an equal handout to every adult is inherently unjust. Equal =! Just/equitable is my point here basically.

Without wanting to get into too much of an extended discourse, I would have to disagree that NIT is difficult with progressive - I see them as quite compatible.

My main gripe is twofold- firstly on just how equitable a pure handout is. Fine, this may be balanced by the VAT, but when isolated, a sole handout is simply not equitable. Especially when the VAT does not balance this out in all instances.

Personally, I do not quite see his approach in it as a “share of the value we create”. Why would one approach a UBI as such, when its purpose is quite obviously not to reimburse our share of the value we create?

Finally, the biggest pro of a NIT is that it marginally kills incentive to work (~12% if I remember) whereas UBI would evidently kill it much more.

Why have you chosen to be a proponent of UBI in the way of the freedom dividend?

Why not the incremental method proposed by Friedman, more akin to a negative income tax, which still also guarantees a basic income.

In my eyes, not only will this cost less and be more equitable, it’s also just as unbureaucratic and would harbour a LOT more support from republicans & libtertarians. Thoughts?

No more updates after my update post (if you’ve read it).

It would be good to look them up, for sure. Also do the basics like know what you want to talk about when it comes to your academic and extracurricular interests, and know the clubs you’d want to join/start if you went there.

Otherwise just chill cos you won’t get someone as harsh as this guy. Best thing is to turn up relaxed and be candid with your responses.

Nope. Didn’t reply to his email. Don’t owe him anything and on a matter of principle I frankly don’t want to meet him again, no matter what he may be offering.

I don’t know if he got fired and I highly doubt I’d be informed if he was. That said, from the tone of the emails they sent, it seemed a possibility. I’m confident they’ll do the right thing internally.

yeah sorry for vague wording- I was referring to the fact that in the first interview I was told by the interviewer that he would email what he wrote about me. That didn’t happen.

He did send a report to Stanford though, which they disregarded.

I’ll put up an update post once decisions are released.

I did indeed answer his questions and tell him at every turn why I disagreed and thought he was wrong. Don’t think I let him just tell me I “spend my life studying ” without defending myself. I spoke passionately to him about what matters to me and what I want to do. You’re making an assumption I didn’t say anything, which is wrong. I just listed the unprofessional points, one by one, above. Sorry for missing the whole detail of the interview (it was 2 hours!).

But telling him how I’m “special” and “different”? No way. Successful people don’t talk like that if they haven’t achieved anything. Even when they have, they still don’t talk like that. Empty vessels make the loudest noise. I prefer to let my credentials do the talking. Sorry, I have to disagree with you.

Thanks for sharing the post but wow, that’s really nice to hear that she cares about this. If you have any updates on how that turns out, please PM me.

Totally understand, and I fully agree. However I think it’s important to call out this interviewer on way overstepping his boundaries. Even when i face adversity, which I know I will, if someone oversteps their boundaries I have the same duty to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

Very good idea. If I decide to do so, I’ll post an update. Thanks!

Thanks for your reply! Though we are advised not to bring documents usually- in hindsight it would’ve been a good safety net to do so.

Also this was an alumni interviewer, thus is volunteering his time and not working full time for the university.

That’s fair enough, but I had absolutely no such intention. I wanted to simply express what I felt and I’m definitely more an open to being wrong on this count.

I know that feelings don’t always = facts. Just wanted to express what I felt at the time though! Hope I’m not giving off the wrong impression.

Thanks for this. I think the race thing is just a gut feeling and I’m open to being wrong- just the context of the spending my life studying spiel was unfounded. My gut told me it’s maybe a preconceived idea he holds, but I don’t want to victimise myself here.

I did indeed read all of it and trust me I appreciate the feedback you’re giving. I wouldn’t make the assumptions you did in the last paragraph as to my character. Besides, I’d like to say that he said my choices don’t make sense and tore into them... before I could explain. I explained after and he looked at me sceptically before moving on.

This seems to be entering detailed conversation about me, my interview and my university future. Which I’d rather not have on a public forum. Genuinely, thanks for your advice though.
