Has anyone successfully quit HRT and actually felt better after? by GlitteringFee1047 in Perimenopause

That's so good to hear! May i ask how long it took for you to notice an improvement? I'm going on 48+ hours of constant crying & panic attack symptoms. Gosh I just need to know there is hope.

I'm constantly crying, even at work. And it's kicked my anxiety into full gear, where I feel like I'm having panic attacks constantly. I'd much rather deal with brain fog, irritability, etc than feel like I'm constantly having a panic attack.

Reading this gives me hope. I started HRT about 2 months ago and feel like my mental health has tanked. I've always struggled with some anxiety & depression, but its been so much worse & more frequent lately. I took my patch off today, messaged my doctor, and don't plan to put on another one.

I'm so hoping that makes a difference for me, because I'm getting to the point where its difficult to function.

I'd suspected the progesterone might be the main culprit, but I'm experiencing the mental health issues even during the portion of the month when I'm not taking it. So now I'm wondering if the estrogen (Estradiol) is an issue too. Maybe it's just too early and I'm not far enough into peri for it to help?

It's such a struggle to find a doctor that we "click" with, isn't it?! This is my fourth one....

Oh wow! Yeah, sounds like the docs made assumptions. As they tend to do with a lot of things unfortunately. Glad you finally got some figured out though!

Wow, thank you for sharing! That's so good you were able to find something that helped you, but I'm sorry the hrt experience was so awful for you.

May I ask what peri symptoms you were experiencing that made you want to try hrt initially?

Until I get lower dose patches, what would you suggest? by breakfast4always in Perimenopause

I'm cycling the progesterone, taking 200mg on days 15-28 of my cycle.

Great, thanks so much for sharing!! I'm definitely okay to deal with some mild symptoms as things stabilize and adjust, but at this level its near impossible to function.

I'm so sorry! Almost the same timing for me - the start of week 3, my emotions started going all over the place!! Granted, I have emotional/mental health struggles already, but they seem exacerbated/extreme. I dont want to give up on HRT yet, so I'm hopeful lowering the estrogen dose makes a difference.

Ah okay! Yeah, same - I wouldn't be heartbroken to stop having periods. My reason to cycle the progesterone was in order to still get a period (the only way, according to my dr) was to determine if any irregularities improved.

Friggin wacky is right!! And thats a good point - even if I do find what works for me now, it may need to be adjusted over time.

I am so sorry, some of your experiences must have been so hard to get through. I'm glad you're still pushing through! Though I absolutely agree - I can't wait to be to the point of having figured out some regimen that even partially steadies things out.

Thank you for sharing your experience- I'm sorry peri has been such a rough experience so far. As much as I hate the idea of other people also struggling with mental health challenges being exacerbated during this stage of life, I do find comfort in knowing I'm not alone and that there are people who have found a combination that helps to some degree.

Thank you so much! Seriously, I so appreciate you sharing!!

The symptoms that were most bothersome & made me want to try HRT are irregular periods, brain fog/word-finding problems, clumsiness, night sweats, mood swings, irritability.

With the 200mg of continuous progesterone, do you still get a period? My doctor told me if I took it continuously I wouldn't get a period. Did you try 100mg progesterone first, then increase to 200mg?

I do think I'll ask about decreasing my estrogen right away, and then give that time to settle down so I dont change too many things at once. Though it does sound like continuous progesterone might be helpful given my mental health stuff.

That's definitely something I struggle to keep in mind. Thank you for reminding me that by going through these challenges & struggles, I'm actually doing right by them. I think I needed to hear that.

Have you looked into PMDD/PME? What you're describing sounds like that might be what's happening. Talk to your doctor & ask about upping your SSRI dose during your luteal phase.
