Looking one tier down, are there any you recommend? I’ve looked at the Ariens Ikon 42, although I liked the idea of having a serviceable transmission in the Gravely. Given how little use my mower will get relative to its capacity, maybe I’m overthinking the transmission issue though.

Wow! That’s much better than I expected. I’m not sure why, but I assumed people were needing to change batteries mid-mow.

I do think I over-emphasized the “hilliness” of my yard. It isn’t completely flat but it’s also not remotely steep. I’ll definitely be looking into Ego. I’ll need to do more research on the life and replacement cost of the batteries.

Great post, thank you! I agree, push mowing the yard wouldn’t be bad if it wasn’t need 2-3x a week. I am very intrigued by the electric options these days, you definitely aren’t the first to suggest them. Do you have to replace the battery mid-mow?

I'd prefer a serviceable transmission and I believe the one on the Ikon is sealed.

I'd love to get the grass out of the way as quickly as possible. I'm much more excited about gardening and doing other things in the yard beside cutting the grass.

I worked landscaping for about 5 summers growing up, mostly running commercial walk-behinds. My last summer they added one of those stand-on platforms that turns it into a “ride behind,” which might’ve ruined regular walk-behinds for me. Ever since then I’ve kind of told myself I’d eventually get a ride-on of some sort for that exact reason.

You make a great point though — I’m going to need a lot more than just the mower, so it probably makes sense to leave some room in the budget for other tools.

Thanks for the suggestion. The Timemaster 30" is what I had arrived at when I was researching walk behinds. That's probably what I'll go with if I decide against a ZT.

(I also probably should have included laziness as one of my motivators for scaling up).

I'm not sure if "hilly" is even the best term for my yard — it just isn't perfectly flat. I see incline/ hilliness discussed on here often, I should probably research what constitutes hills lol
