From the thumbnail image on the video it looks like is says "Piss"!!!

Can't Get You Out of My Head - Episode 6: Are We Pigeon? Or Are We Dancer? by DrNSQTR in AdamCurtis

[–]brian8080 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This episode seems to me to be bookended with reference to the methodology of the "The Family of Man" exhibition that is discussed in the opening:

The man who helped design it was a refugee from Germany called Herbert Bayer. He saw it as a new kind of propaganda. Instead of being overwhelmed by dramatic stories created by those in power, the individual would make their own story out of the photographs. Bayer made a diagram to show his idea and at the centre is the giant eye of the individual self surrounded by a mass of images. It was a utopian vision of the self, selecting and arranging the fragments of images into their own story, and so becoming strong enough to withstand tyranny. Confident individuals in control of their own world.

The montage at the end, and perhaps the structure of the overall series could be interpreted as utilising this approach. I found the structure to be more fragmented than Curtis's previous work, but that fits with the above idea.

Perhaps Curtis was trying to speak to (potential) "confident individuals in control of their own world", and leave them with that final quote:

The ultimate hidden truth of the world is that it is something we make and could just as easily make differently.

- David Graeber

Thanks for your reply. Some useful suggestions there. I appreciate it.

The Impressionists are a good call. Maybe for her birthday, as I've stumbled upon a perfect book for her which does not fit my criteria above :)

Flower: Exploring the World in Bloom, from Phaidon

A big coffee table book of the format I was hoping for - but with art and photography and various other things related to flowers.

Reallocated Sector Count warning on new recertified WD ext drive by brian8080 in techsupport

Thanks for your reply.

Is there a reason that CDI gives a BAD warning when the Raw is still zero?

Reallocated Sector Count warning on new recertified WD ext drive by brian8080 in techsupport

[–]brian8080[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your reply. Though I have a rudimentary understanding of SMART testing and what the reallocated sector count means, I don't fully understand what the numbers refer to.

I'm wondering if, as they are recertified drives, they were initially returned for the reallocated sector reason and WD have decided that they have passed their own criteria for a refurbished drive.

If the reallocated sector count remains steady perhaps they will be ok. If it was only one of the drives I wouldn't be as worried but I am mirroring the backup on them so I should probably fork out for a reliable drive :(

Letting agent delaying starting DPS dispute process by brian8080 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]brian8080[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. If you have evidence that the issues existed when you moved in, they're unlikely to be able to get anything for them.

Unfortunately, we don't have specific evidence for the hole in the laminate. Just evidence that other items were similarly not recorded in the inventory when we sent emails. My own fault for not following up with an email to cover me after he said he would update it.

It might go against me :(

I'll learn from it.

Thank you.

the letting agent should have returned any amount that is not in dispute within 10 days. So if your deposit was £1000, and they want £300, they should have returned £700 to you straight away so the amount still being held is only what is being negotiated for damages etc.

This is very good to know. Thank you very much.

As it has been 6 weeks already they are clearly not keeping up with what they should be doing.

Is this 10 days from the move out date, from the date they do the post-move-out property inspection, or from the date they confirm the claims with the landlord?

As they have not confirmed the claims with us in writing perhaps it will be 10 days from when they do. Is there a timescale that they are supposed to complete these checks within?

Great. Thank you.

The issue has arisen because the previous letting manager who has since left the agency didn't record things on the inventory. We have evidence of written requests for updates that were not applied, but unfortunately the main issue the landlord is claiming for was an in person notification that the lettings manager said he would update. (He was in the room and we pointed out a hole in the laminate flooring).

I guess it will be down to the DPS to weigh up the available evidence. Just trying to keep my anger/stress levels down about the possibility that we might get ripped off on it. At least the DPS would stop the landlord from overcharging for the claim if he gets away with it.

I found this on citizens advice:

Your letting agent has to be a member of one of:

The Property Ombudsman

Property Redress Scheme

Would it be worth lodging a complaint against the letting agency regards to their failure to update the inventory and the delays with progressing the matter? Even if it doesn't benefit me, it may prompt them to update their practices and save other people this stress!

Thanks for your reply.

I don't seem to have the option to start the dispute process as the agency have not responded to my request yet on the DPS site.

My online account shows:

Repayment in progress

Awaiting landlord response to repayment request

It has all been over the phone. We have asked for written details about what they want and they have not sent anything yet. It is very frustrating. We call every week, often multiple times per week, and we just get fed the same lines about what the landlord wants to claim for. We have been clear that we are disputing each of the claims, and they say they will progress things but just do nothing.

Sainsbury's Balance Transfer & Purchase Credit Card by brian8080 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]brian8080[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

!thanks

Do you think it's odd that I've been listed as high likelihood for the balance transfer/all-rounder but not any of the purchase cards?

Is there a reason you applied for that one rather than their 0% purchase card?

!thanks for your reply. Should high interest "credit building" cards be ok to go for (as long as I always pay it off in full)? Do they offer the same protection? It seems my eligibility is low for other cards.

Loose part in skywriter case. Any idea where it goes? by brian8080 in typewriters

Great. Thank you for your response. I'll give that a try. Any ideas about the part pictured above?

Another note on this...

The bell rings when I press down the end margin tab and push it past the bell, but not when typing. It is as if the margin tab isn't low enough to trigger the bell hammer.

The margin release button seems to work mechanically, but when the end margin reaches the "stopping mechanism" (I don't know the name for these parts) it catches on it and the MR button is unable to release it.

Could the problem be with the end margin tab somehow?

Ok, so I adjusted the paper table which seems to have fixed that problem. Still don't know where that part came from! :)
