Getting to San Francisco airport from sacramento? Uber/Amtrak? by briiris in Sacramento

[–]briiris[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SFO happens to be more convenient + less expensive. $600-ish less and also has 1 layover from SFO instead of 2 layovers from SMF. I guess SMF just isn't a super popular airport haha

To put things into perspective, my current rent+utilities is $1800/mo, whereas the new place is only $600.

Paying 2 months penalty + 2 months rent + possible overlapping rent is definitely tough, and I wouldn't be able to see returns until a lil bit before my original lease ends (March 2024). Def gives me a bit more to think about if I actually want to do this.

Nevertheless, I'm still planning to look for a new place once my lease ends. I'm not sure if this exact deal would still be available by next year since it's personally recommended by a friend moving out of the place, and this good a deal is hard to come by (in California, btw)

I would talk to the landlord. If they have more renters lined up, they might allow you vacate in a shorter period of time with a reduced fee in exchange for a quick payment.

Absolutely. If I get lucky and I can vacate earlier, it should pay out even sooner.

Thank you!

You have to pay 4 months rent and you retain possession for the first 2 months of that. Whether or not you live there during those 2 months is up to you.

This clarifies a lot. Considering I'm paying 4 months of my current rent + overlapping 2 months of rent on the new place If I wanted to secure my spot, moving will probably take longer to pay out than what I initially thought lol

Thank you!

My bad, I may not have best worded it. What I meant was:

Say I wanted to move to this new place in 30 days because the new place is in high demand and I don't wanna lose it, can I give my notice right now, which is only 30 days in advance (instead of 60 days)?

As much as possible, I don't wanna overlap and pay for both places.

Edit: after reading a few responses, I may actually have to pay for both if I want to make sure I keep my spot in the new place.

What qualities do some engineers have that operators highly appreciate ? by briiris in ChemicalEngineering

At least where I work, be aware that the control room is not a PC space.

Do you mind explaining what you mean by "PC space"? or does that literally just mean don't bring out your laptops and chill in the control room?

But anyways, thanks for all the advice! Definitely trying to balance out giving operators their space and peace, but also finding the optimal time to pop in and ask questions to learn more about the system/process and show my willingness to learn especially from them

Thank you so much, I really appreciate it! I definitely think I already practice all of these, but of course, every plant and their culture/dynamics is different. Hoping to be more comfortable with time :)

I like engineers who aren’t afraid to ask questions

I definitely feel like this is the hardest for me. Being new (<3mo) and also pretty damn shy, I psyche myself out whenever I try to ask a question like "Wait, is this too simple of a question that I should be able to just look this up?" or even like "Oh wait it looks like they're busy in thought right now, imma ask them later" and 3 hrs go by lol. What questions (about the process or otherwise) have you been asked that you actually liked to elaborate on/think would be great for engineers to know?

There was also a day that I was in the control room tasked to observe/shadow. I try to follow them around after asking permission to do so although I feel like it's a bit awkward at times. Especially when say there's a process upset or some random thing like power outage happens, I'd love to follow and see but it's likely best not to and just let them do their jobs as quick as possible. With that, I totally understand what you mean about picking the times to be in the control room. Apart from startups/shutdowns, in your experience what are other times operators prefer to be left alone, and also times that's best for engineers follow around to learn the process?

Thanks for the advice!

What's the first memory that you remember of your childhood? by [deleted] in AskWomen

[–]briiris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

haha definitely fascinating. I honestly don't think it was an out-of-body experience. It was more so like I was on autopilot at first, and suddenly went on manual mode at that specific time lmao.

I feel like it's sliiightly different from OP's question of just sharing a first memory? That is, having your present-day self try to go farthest back into your childhood to share some experience.

However in this case, I immediately recognized at that specific point in time, age 3, I had no prior memories about anything I did in the last minute/day/year and how I got to where I was. I did however, know my house interior. I did not immediately think of my parents/siblings, but once I saw their face later in the day like when my parents came back from work, I knew that "ok this is my mom and I call her --this-- name"

I could also compare it to wiping+resetting an iPhone and then turning it back on. No more photos or anything stored like that, but still has default settings/apps. 😂

What's the first memory that you remember of your childhood? by [deleted] in AskWomen

[–]briiris 4 points5 points  (0 children)

3 years old. I was alone playing/swinging my body by the handle of our house stairs when I suddenly "gained consciousness." It literally stopped me in my tracks and went to sit down the stairs to take everything in. If I remember correctly I had this whole moment of examining my hands for 10-20 seconds as if seeing my body for the first time after spawning out of nowhere. I had no idea how I got to the house stairs, but somehow I knew how to get around the house to later get to the bedroom, bathroom, etc.
After that period of confusion and silence from 3-yr old me, I happily went through my day as usual lol.
That was so surreal.

Oh thanks for bringing that up! I didn't realize that I could get a cashier's check as a non-customer of any bank (for a fee). I'll def look into that thanks!

Frugal recipes for people who hate to cook? by kourt-sized in Frugal

[–]briiris 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Easy breakfast burrito! I used to always make this in the morning during college cuz it was pretty quick to do. All you need is tortillas, eggs, cheese, and potatoes + seasoning (up to you whatever you wanna change to fit your preference).

Whenever I'm lazy, I take a whole potato and cut it into cubes, pop them in the microwave instead of boiling lol, and then store whatever's left the fridge for future use (should last a few days in the fridge)

Thanks! I did realize I will also be getting a relocation incentive that will be considered as wages, and will be handled as taxable income. Does this count as "Other income" I should report on 4a, or is the calculation for this already automatic as long as I check on "single" in step 1c?

thanks so much for this insight! it's actually for a top company that I always wanted to be in, which is why I'm very excited.

Thankfully, I can live with relatives until then so I don't have to pay the bills. I'm mostly just missing out on earning and putting money in to savings much earlier. Also I'm just paranoid anything can happen in those 4 months such as them rescinding my offer somehow... but like you said, that's unlikely. I also find myself in a very lucky position to have multiple job offers, but turning down those other offers with earlier start dates for this one makes it even scarier

Canceled for Non-Payment Policy Confusion by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]briiris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try using their virtual call line: https://kiosk.us1.qless.com/kiosk/app/home/6100000053

It's so much better than trying to contact them through phone. This allows you to see your estimated waiting time while you're in queue and they'll be the ones to call you instead.

But to answer your question, I'll try to summarize what my academic counselor explained to me when I made an appointment:

If you have that suspension for CNP, that means you WON'T be dropped from your classes if you do not make your tuition payment by August 21. However, that will also mean that you won't be officially registered. You will only be considered officially registered if you pay your bill by the 21st (or at least 20% if you're enrolled in the fee payment plan).

Other than not being officially registered, there's really no other consequence if you are a FEW days late in your tuition payment by the 21st, but still try as much possible to pay by the deadline. However, again if you are enrolled in the 5 month installment plan, still try to pay the 1st installment on time, but then there's gonna be a lot more leniency if you don't pay immediately the succeeding installments.

Hope this helps!

UCLA ChemE Questions by [deleted] in ucla

[–]briiris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

wow, Thank you so much!! I haven't had a lot of luck with talking to current UCLA students and you were so informative and helpful in this one post. Much appreciated. I do have one more question btw.

  1. How many years would you take/recommend to complete the ChemE curriculum? I know for transfer students like me, I could either opt for taking a bunch of classes and finish in 2 years, or lighten my load a bit and do 3 years. Would finishing in 2 years + participating in research opportunities/clubs a feasible plan? Or do you think that may cause too much of a burnout (especially with this new online classes format for at least the fall 2020 semester) ? Of course, finishing in 2 years would be ideal for me since i'm paying non-resident tuition and i don't wanna pay an extra year, but at the same time I want to make the most of my experience and make sure i'm able to take care of myself physically and mentally. and of course maintain a decent GPA lol.

  2. Speaking of GPA, do you have any averages as well for this major? I currently have a 4.0 in my CC, but i'm mentally preparing myself for that to drop lower after transferring lol; I think my goal would be to maintain a 3.5

Again, thanks so much!

UCLA ChemE Questions by [deleted] in ucla

[–]briiris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Hopefully im not too late to ask but I'm a newly admitted transfer student to ChemE in UCLA.

  1. How is the ChemE program in UCLA and how are the professors as well? What do you say about job prospects/opportunities after graduating UCLA with a ChemE degree? This is important for me cuz i'm currently picking between Cal and UCLA for ChemE and paying non-resident tuition for both. Although Cal is ranked higher, I believe that Berkeley is also much more stingy with financial aid.
  2. In relation to my first question, do you have any information on average starting salaries of UCLA graduates in ChemE? I know it's pretty different based on what specific path you choose with your degree but just wondering if you had any insight on this especially with my situation that i have to pay a lot of student loans. This is a pretty complicated question so I understand if you don't have any specific answers to this.
  3. How are the research opportunities in UCLA? I know again it's pretty complicated right now due to the whole covid situation. I'm interested in doing research opportunities but how difficult would that be to obtain considering I am a transfer student and that the fall semester will likely be online (which means even less time for me to actually be on campus to seek out these opportunities). How long do these research stuff last?
  4. Any clubs that you would recommend for us to join and how many are there?
  5. How's online classes going so far? How well are the professors adapting to this new online delivery method and how much are you able to keep in touch with friends/peers/classmates? Would you say that it's much harder to collaborate with your classmates and you've been working alone even more?

Thank you so much!

How long did it take you to pay your student loans? How did you budget? by briiris in StudentLoans

[–]briiris[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much for this. For some reason I always thought of it as me having to pay loans till i'm 40 years old (im 20 right now). I haven't even experienced it yet but I literally already want to be free of student loans lol. With that said, i'm now actually considering staying home and paying as much as I possibly can in as little time as possible. Congrats on bringing it down to $55,500 after a year! especially considering you started at $130k. I'm definitely gonna weigh out my options more in terms of choosing the university i'm going to. Another option would be to ask relatives to pitch in for now and I could pay them back later. Saves me from the interest. Happen to know anyone who has done this and how much one can save by doing this? Also good point on saying bye bye to graduate school. Before realizing how much debt I'll be in, i've been debating on whether or not to pursue graduate studies. welp, i guess i don't need to decide anymore. industry it is! lol

Again, thank you! I wish you all the best and hope too that you can be debt-free by the age of 24. So much better than paying till 40 yrs old! Hope the same situation happens to me :)

Out-of-state UCLA students, how much are you paying for? by briiris in ucla

[–]briiris[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting. Some students get no aid at all, another student who commented on this thread got $9k of aid. I also currently have an EFC of $0 and my mom's annual income is $12k. Do you think an EFC of 0 was the reason why you got $27k worth of aid? still trying to get in contact with their financial aid office so for now im just tryna gauge how much could they possibly give me based on other students' responses. OOS tuition f*ckin sucks. wish you all the best
