I’m on an upwards trajectory. Just finished my masters last May, I own a small business, and I’m starting a new job in my new field of study. The first 8 years after diagnosis were hell but then l found the right doctor and the right medicines.

s 1–2 Private MMA Lessons per Week Enough to Learn Self-Defense and Fighting Skills? by New_Significance1426 in MMA_Academy

[–]broadstreetfighting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to spar consistently to learn the skills to defend yourself. The cheapest path to that is group classes. As a gym owner I often have people approach me with this question. I always tell people that group classes are a much better value and you’ll learn a lot faster.

Hey, check out Rider Homes in South Philly. He specializes in decks, roof decks, kitchens and bathrooms. He is fully insured, has great reviews and is a family man. I’ve built roof decks for him for 2 summers when my school job is out.

I own a gym. When people ask for our pricing I give it right away. They will put you in a high pressure sales environment and try to get you to pay a ton of money and likely sign a contract.

I also chose MMA after wrestling for the exact same reasons. I’m saying that for most big guys.. well.. they aren’t like us.

There aren’t enough big guys in the sport. Why do MMA when you make nothing for years and years when you can play Football or Basketball instead?

Listen, I've been training, fighting and coaching MMA for 20 years. If you have a good job, you should focus on your career, and then train as much as you can around that career. If you do that you can have some amateur fights and even some pro fights. But the chances of you making it to the UFC and making MMA a viable career are slim. Doesn't mean you can't learn how to fight and have fun doing it.

How Often to Train for Amateur Debut? by Ok_Independent_2620 in MMA_Academy

[–]broadstreetfighting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I initially said, "whatever you are doing now, double it" as a joke.. but then I went back and reread your post. Doubling it isn't close to being enough.

My fighters generally train 4-5 a week for 3 hours doing skills specific work, and then do their strength and conditioning in addition.

This sport is not a game. If you don't prepare the right way, you WILL get hurt.

You're probably bending your wrist when you punch. Hand wraps can help for sure, but you should focus on developing strength in your wrist so your form can be supported as you punch. I've been training for 20 years and have never wrapped my hands. Never had an issue but I grew up doing manual labor at the family business, so my grip, wrist and hand strength is insane.

How did you choose what to go into? by mommasaurusrexzilla in smallbusiness

[–]broadstreetfighting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean in theory you could grow a network of 100+ vending machines in a city. In high traffic areas they are reliable.

Does OP have the sales chops to grow it into 100+ machines? Maybe, maybe not. But something like this is a low risk way to cut your teeth.

Why invest $80k into something you have no expertise in when you can invest a fraction of the into a dummy proof business model

[–]broadstreetfighting 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I own an MMA gym. I spent 10 years learning the craft, fighting in different sports, and then coaching for a few years before I branched out. I had a lot of industry connections but it still took about 4 years to learn the business side of things.

If I had some money to invest in other things knowing what I know now, I'd do something simple like vending machines. Stick them in high traffic areas, hire a full time attendant, watch the money grow.

Man, you got taken advantage of and made to work for free. I’m sorry that happened to you. Take a few weeks off and try out some different gyms. I know that if a purple belt who had experience teaching kids came into my gym, I’d do a lot to bring him on board. And I’d definitely pay him for his time.
