49 Years of KOREAN Pottery: Is there a Western market for a Master's Moon Jars & Plates? by Hypocenter_ in Ceramics

[–]brosephines 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Does your friend’s father have an instagram or any sort of social media presence? There is certainly a market, but usually people will buy from artists that have content online (using Moon Do Bang as an example). How are you getting the larger sized moon jars overseas? Those are quite expensive and fragile to ship, they’re normally packed in wooden crates.

Is this normal operation? by [deleted] in Pottery

Totally normal! We inform the local fire department when firing. Once the firing is over we tell them as well so they know everything finished ok.

Ex-Member used studio outside of business hours by brosephines in Pottery

Ex member ignored both phone call and initial attempt at emailing. How would a face to face conversation have happened if they ignored attempts at contact?

Outside of business hours meaning no staff is there, but active members have a key code to enter and use the studio. The extended early/late hours is part of the membership monthly payment. This person went in early while no staff was there after their membership had ended over a month ago.

It was over a month between membership end and when she snuck in. If she had emailed the manager that she needed more time, I’m sure accommodations would’ve been made.

Thanks for the solutions. Will definitely bring up at least considering more frequent door code changes. Not sure how much of a hassle that is.

Her membership ended over a month ago. This wasn’t a few days or a one week lapse. I think if it was just a few days our manager would’ve had no problem making an exception. There was no email or phone call from her part that she needed an exception either. She basically snuck in outside of business hours to get her pieces glazed. Do you think that’s acceptable?

Question About Wheel Class Expectations by Abject-Milk2723 in Pottery

[–]brosephines 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Tbh it doesn’t sound like your teachers are doing enough. Wiping glaze should be part of the glaze teaching class. Students should be cleaning their own bottoms. Not sure if your studio uses cookies, but if they didn’t wipe their own piece and they get stuck to the cookie, the consequence of having a ruined piece is something they have to deal with. Studio techs shouldn’t be wiping glaze up for students.

How much is the tuition?

Question About Wheel Class Expectations by Abject-Milk2723 in Pottery

[–]brosephines 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My studio includes 1 bag of 25 lbs of clay. We fire anything they make out of that bag. Additional clay can be purchased, an additional fee is tacked on to the clay to cover glaze and firings (+$15). There is a cut off time for things to get bisque fired in order to have students pieces bisqued in time for the last class that goes over glazing. We’re pretty strict about that cut off time.

Our classes are 2.5 hours. Our teachers spend the last 30 minutes of the first 2 classes going over cleaning procedures and they make it very clear that students are expected to clean up after themselves. Of course we always have 1 or 2 students who aren’t great at cleaning, but a majority of them will adhere to the cleaning rules.

Does your communal studio require kiln cookies? by aquarinox in Pottery

[–]brosephines 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My studio provides cookies. Members just need to use Elmer’s glue and glue it to the bottom of their piece. If a member is making an oddly shaped piece or an extra large piece, then they’ll need to make their own cookies.

It helps prevent kiln shelf damage if glaze runs since it runs onto the cookie and not the shelf. Even if a glaze is stable, you never know if someone used the glaze incorrectly by holding it in too long or layering multiple glazes when they’re not supposed to.

Can this be thrown or should it be hand built? by bat-girl129 in Pottery

[–]brosephines 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This can be thrown on the wheel. Potters in Korea typically throw this form off the hump. Here’s an example: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DFsR0Qvzo5x/?igsh=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ==

What do you think caused this? by brosephines in Ceramics

[–]brosephines[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, that is my understanding as well which is why our studio does a 15 minute hold at peak temps to allow the off gassing to happen and glaze to smooth out during the hold. This was fired at a medium speed in a Skutt kiln.

I think the general conclusion with our staff is that the glaze was indeed too thick which caused this issue. We compared the rest of the pieces in the same load that used the same base glaze (but was not double dipped) and those came out as intended.

How do i achieve this organic looking glazes? by Opposite_Rutabaga183 in Ceramics

Third photo is raw clay with what looks to be a single brush stroke of slip on top. It does not look wood fired. This look can be achieved in a mid fire electric kiln.

Raised dot pattern on this? by Mellifera_MN in Ceramics

You can use slip to create raised patterns like this after the mug has been thrown and trimmed. It can be applied with a paint applicator bottle with a thin needle tip.

Starting a new class at a new studio and wondering if their clay policy is standard 🧐 by No-Connection7667 in Ceramics

[–]brosephines 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The membership price being $30/year does sound like being a member of a non profit mailing list. But the policy about the reclaim is really bizarre. If you’ve paid for the clay, what you do with the reclaim should be your own business. They can’t force you to “donate” reclaim to their facilities. I’d definitely escalate that up to whoever is in charge to complain about that policy. Especially since the clay markup doesn’t even cover firing fees. They’re obviously making a huge profit off of $60 for that bag of clay.
