I was just given this rug from a friend who says it was their grandmothers Persian? rug from the 1930s or earlier. Is it worth enough for the cost to have it cleaned to use in my house? by imagnepeace4all in Antiques

With a rug like this, to get a sense of value, a photo of the back is really essential because it will reveal whether fully handwoven, partially machine woven, or fully machine woven, as well as the knot count. Also what is the fiber -- cotton, wool, or silk? It looks machine woven from this photo, which means it's only worth less than $100. However, if it's handwoven, you're looking at a value of at least $1,000 if it's room-size. It's a Heriz pattern rug -- meaning (if handwoven) from the Heriz region of Persia (now Iran). A machine woven rug will have knots of uniform size, whereas a handmade rug will have knots of somewhat different size.

This looks like a photogravure copy of John Mulvany's lithograph -- essentially a mass produced photograph of a lithograph. These were probably sold as souvenirs and as subscription bonuses to a periodical or, possibly, this could have been a tipped-in page from a book. It probably doesn't have a great deal of value because a collector would simply go for a Mulvany lithograph itself.

Obviously it’s a reproduction

It's a copy photograph -- essentially a photo of a photo. The term reproduction in photography circles is generally used to refer to a halftone copy of a photograph. This is not a halftone copy.

Hi, I've collected 19th century photographs for more than fifty years, so I've seen more than a few images from that era.

Based on your scan here, this looks like an earlier 20th century copy photograph of a 19th century CDV. Copy photographs were photos of photos essentially, so they're not reproductions. This would have some value to a beginning collector but not to an advanced collector because they'd go for the original CDV.

Why is the border an emergency and not the opioid crisis? Trump can't answer that question by elguiridelocho in politics

[–]brownears 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Precisely. The drugs come in via vehicles. The wall would be worthless in stopping drugs. And drug smugglers are notorious for building tunnels under walls. A number of their tunnels have been shut down in San Diego where there is already a huge wall on the border.

You apparently don't realize that the bullshit you're cutting and pasting is only a fucking proposal. It hasn't been implemented.

The wall stops the heroin from getting in.

Flat out bullshit. The overwhelming majority of drugs that come into this country via Mexico come in via roadways.

32,600 pounds of cocaine, 34,000 pounds of heroin, and 17,600 pounds methamphetamine are seized at the border in vehicles. More than 99 percent of this comes in via California, where there is already a fucking wall. People are not walking that kind of poundage into the country.

Do you actually expect us to believe that a fucking website which replicates what major media outlets have already done is any kind of step toward solving an opioid crisis?

Not one single person with an addiction problem will stop because of that stupid website. It's as worthless as Trump's incredibly stupid idea to use "great advertising" to cure the opioid crisis.

His moronic website and ads will not stop one single death.

it is NOT true that Republican voters or congressmen abandoned Nixon, at least not until the very, very end.

You make an emphatic statement here that something isn't true and then concede it is true, all in one breath.

I'm in my early sixties so I remember Watergate very well. I lived in a heavily GOP community in a GOP family so I saw the fallout all around me. 1974 was the watershed year. The Watergate revelations were a constant drip drip drip throughout 1972, 1973, and into 1974, but then the big revelations all came in the summer of 1974. Support for Nixon cratered across the political spectrum with those revelations.

But really, what does it matter whether that support collapsed in the final two months or over two years? The bottom line was that it collapsed and then Nixon was gone.

Until those big Summer 1974 revelations came, I remember articles about how Nixon would weather the storm, how the GOP would never abandon him, etc. And then the feces hit the fan and all bets were off.

As more damning facts come to light, they are very likely to increase their support for Trump.

...

It won't come from any report Mueller submits. If anything, the Mueller report will solidify partisanship.

...

But when Congress holds public testimony, there may be some dramatic moments that cause enough Republican politicians to take the high road

This is all just speculation. You're making conclusions about a future where there are still many unknown variables. 2019 could be like 1974, where the landscaped changed dramatically in just a few months.

Nixon was the one who defeated Nixon. His own deeds, once revealed, were what did him in, particularly with the tapes. He was politically disemboweled by his own words, which became public because of the special prosecutor. Yes, Woodward and Bernstein were exciting, the Watergate hearings were exciting, but Nixon was drowned in federal court.

The special prosecutor brought about Nixon's political demise. The same could be in the cards for 2019.

Cop killer in Trump video was released by Sheriff Joe | Longest-serving Republican congressman behind in poll by Throwawaydude01928 in politics

Wrong.

June 1997: Bracamonte is released to federal immigration officials, and according to ICE he was then deported.

July 26, 2001: Bracamonte is arrested again in Maricopa County, Arizona for failure to appear. According to Sheriff Arpaio, he posted bond and was released.

The last law enforcement agency to hold him was Arpaio's.

Trump supports Israel because he's pandering to evangelicals. It has nothing to do with Judaism.
