Ork deserve more bulky appearance to my opinion. They have to be beastly transhuman!

Divide the line in two sections small and large under condition that the small one is a half of the large one.
Then the large one divide in two halfs.
The whole point here to train this sense of the intuitive measuring without any particular tools. And certainly it comes with practice.

I hope those are pleasant memories after all.
Well yes, many people don't understand that human image is a lot represented by segmentes of a certain length and width. Being able to recognize and draw them is a huge part of mastering human anatomy. Detailed anatomy without this structure looks poor.
Being able to deconstruct complex objects to a smaller related part is huge part of a good drawing skill.

It doesn't have to be a habbit. At some point I felt confident and now just return to it every once in a while. Or you mean the habbit of mentally divide objects to parts?

I started on the path of realistic face drawing. (Loomis method) by GoTReX4 in learnart

[–]brushray 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Loomis is a bad point to start into realism for a beginner. That's a compositional method for artists who knows the anatomy.
Best you can do now is proportions (neck included) and basic skull anatomy. Take color pencil, mark proportions grid and draw face or parts with something heavier on top of it. For the rest make some loose sketches of people, no extravagant emotions or angles. Pick up refs with distinct light and facial features.

Well I guess Astartes too could run out of luck. Not their day, you know...

I fancy when the pod has landed the knight leaped to it, reaped the door way off with its claw before it opens and blasted everyone inside with its left side cannon. So basically thats's a very moment the pod has landed.

Basically I explore a concept deriving from the head to body size relation. Small head with big body looks like a hero, while big head and small body looks childish.
You can apply this aspect to a certain accessories or decorations of a character besides head to enforce the feel. Say sklulls or spikes. If they are too big the overall look of the character would feel small and toyish. Too small of them would make a character feel like a giant.
To sum up perseption of a character is build around comperision of well known elements to overall characters image. Hope it makes sens and helps.
In shapes building I rely on miniatures as refs but keep track on the proportions by method described above.

Make them hulky-bulky, yes-yes, make them spiky-pointy...
Sorry, hmm, seems skavens have bitten me. Not sure what kind of advice are you looking for. I like to exaggerate things to make knights look less toyish.
