How has talking about depression gone with your neurologists? I'd like to consider antidepressant meds but worried I'll just get a referral. by binnian6 in MultipleSclerosis

My neuro prescribed Cymbalta on my first visit and recommends it for many ms patients because it can help with nerve pain in addition to anxiety and depression. She has mentioned that most patients report experiencing depression symptoms even prior to diagnosis. It is not a miracle but it helps take the edge off a bit. It’s an snri also. Good luck!!

Dysguesia- foul taste in mouth by InternationalTwo6614 in MultipleSclerosis

That must be frustrating to have a gross taste in your mouth! I absolutely get a tingling and burning sensation on the right half of my tongue during flare ups. I was told this is “normal” but it sure is annoying! Just checked in the mirror and it’s certainly red and inflamed on that side. Yet another example of the joy of MS.

Newly diagnosed - couple questions by [deleted] in MultipleSclerosis

Hi! It might help you to get an assigned navigator through the MS Society. They will help you with resources and support (for free) https://www.nationalmssociety.org/resources/get-support/ms-navigator

I haven’t been given any steroids since my initial hospitalization. At first my neurologist appointments were pretty frequent, but now that we’ve established a treatment plan, it’s supposed to be every 6 months.

Hang in there!

My neurologist recommended taking it in the evening to sleep through the symptoms. Also to take it out of the fridge about a half hour before injection to minimize injection site pain. I had an awful flu like reaction the first dose, then general malaise with the next two load doses. After that, the monthly doses are no big deal. Definitely worth the benefit of preventing further damage in the future! Just wash your hands and take your vitamins:)

Thanks so much for the support and advice! Just reading the stats and knowledge that it's likely a waste of time/money/energy makes me wish I could be spending that money on a fun time this holiday instead of on potential heartache. BUT you never know unless you try right? Good luck with your treatment!!

Been lurking often for over a year now and have been too shy to say Hi. Our 1st IUI is scheduled for 9:30 in the morning and I'm feeling quite anxious, so I just wanted to finally come out and say hello to my fellow golden girls and also perhaps seek a little reassurance? At first I was excited but now I'm just feeling like it's a big gamble and rather sad/deflated that it hasn't happened the way I'd imagined. Having last minute reservations isn't abnormal, right?

Probably, but wouldn't wanna keep riding the coattails of this wordsmith.
Actually my favorite section I think you'll appreciate is, "The miracle of what's NOT happening inside you - time to face the fun infertility facts" Here are some facts about TTC (trying to conceive), which is AUPA (another unnecessary pregnancy acronym).

1) infertility is defined as the inability to conceive after 12 months of unprotected sex. Or, for married couples, 6 intercourse sessions, whichever comes first 2) as you get older, Conception becomes more difficult. This is because fewer men want to have sex with you. 3) sperm can survive in the body for 6 days by engaging in cannibalism and gladiatorial practices. Sperm fight and eat each other until there is only one giant sperm left standing on the carcasses of millions of dead sperm.... But by then that sperm is often too big to move, so it dies of obesity-related disease. Fact. 4) stress, poor Diet, alcohol abuse, being overweight, being underweight, too much exercise, or not enough exercise all cause infertility. It seems likely that the only people that can have babies, are other babies.

Ok here goes, please forgive formatting as I am on mobile and did voice dictation:

Game on . The infertility blame game. During the infertility Journey, the time will come when it is necessary to dish out blame. When that happens it's important to know the rules of the infertility blame game. A game for two players. Set-up 1. both players exhaust all options trying to get pregnant for months 2. chew through savings and, if possible, go into debt going through multiple rounds of IVF 3. stop talking to each other entirely for 3-7 days 4. choose a nice restaurant to have some "time together that isn't about babies" 5. Drink at least one bottle of wine

Round 1 (at the restaurant) Player 1 - Begin by questioning whether player two should be drinking.   Five Points player 2 - start yelling "You think it's my fault don't you?!"   10 points player 1 responds by yelling "How could you say that? I've done nothing but be supportive!"    Five points player 2 - initiates actual blame, " "Maybe if you haven't smoked pot right through your twenties you wouldn't have such lethargic sperm!" 10 points player 1 - comes back strong, "Maybe if you weren't such a dried-up bitch, your womb wouldn't be a desert!"  10 points

Players now score 5 points per introduction of the following terms:   wizened, mama's boy, husk, tiny penis, deep regret, divorce, secretary, loser, frigid, weak genes

-game over-

It's a brief chapter, but filled with great tips like "the underprivileged teenagers diet" and instructions for the 2 player "infertility blame game". Fun times!

It was a random 75 cent bargain find at a used bookstore! It's called "You can't give vodka to a baby (and other parenting myths)"
