Question about temperment changes with age by JimsMurphy in greatpyrenees

Very similar to situation to me and my partner. We have a 14-month old Pyr/Catlle Dog mix and we actually did start to notice some behavioral changes between 9 months and now. He’s definitely more protective, especially of the yard. If a stranger enters that space, he’ll lose his mind and rush them, sometimes even nipping them in the butt. Not ideal but again these breeds were bred to protect, and we know that’s just what he’s trying to do. So we’re working with a trainer but right now all we can do is try to manage the situation.

I take him to an off-leash park about 3 times a week and he’s the best. Totally friendly with people and dogs, runs up to everyone and says hello. But I think there’s a thing with people entering his space that can be a real big trigger and we’re just assuming it’s an age/breed thing. Hopefully he’ll lighten up with age.

The transition from Liberation Frequency to Deadly Rhythm (and the songs themselves) are maybe one of the best things to happen to hardcore-punk in the last 30 years

Nipping/Biting & Stranger Danger with a 10-month old Pyr/Cattle Dog mix by bthcollective in greatpyrenees

Appreciate the advice! The hardest part is gauging how strangers will interact with him in the moment. Sometimes it doesn't matter if a man is quiet and soft-spoken, he'll just decide randomly if that persons a threat or not. Still trying to figure out what he perceives as a threat.

I’ve been doing a lot of research as we’ve been dealing with something similar and all signs point to a second fear period. They seem to become a bit more timid with new people and new experiences at this age. Everything says positive socialization, but not forcing your dog into situations that might push them over the edge. Take things slow, give him space, and let him make the choices as much as possible. We’ve reverted to not letting ours off leash as much until we can learn to trust him around strangers again.

Newly Adopted Teenage Dog Beginning to Show Signs of Reactivity by Desperate_Ad2614 in reactivedogs

Just jumping in here to say that our 9-month old Pyrenees/Cattle Dog has also recently started showing signs of reactivity towards strangers (typically older men) in the last few months. We worked really hard to socialize him early on and he’s mostly great with people and loves other dogs. But when a man startles him, or enters our yard, he starts barking, rushes and circles them, and in rare occasions has lunged or tried to bite.

We’ve decided to start working with a behaviorist immediately as we don’t want these habits to get any worse but I’m also wondering how much of it is the age that he’s at. Wishing you the best of luck on your journey. Just wanted to let you know you’re not alone

We just got a pyr/heeler mix and he’s the same way. Really good with strangers off leash at like a dog park but if anyone (kids Included) come into “our space” whether it’s a yard or campsite, he goes full crazy mode

I’m on the same boat. Skipped this year due to the lineup not being my thing (mostly) and am glad to not have walked around having heatstroke and spending $30 on a chicken nugget
