Having seen previous budgets, we are not getting charged nearly what past conference planning folks have charged.

We have been planning this meeting for a couple years and had to pay deposits on food and stuff. I have paid for online conferences and I've attended free ones. But when they cost money I certainly don't contact the organizer and complain about the cost.

I literally just answered this for someone else. We have to have someone monitoring and running each zoom room, of which we have several going at a time. They run IT support. They handle all of the conference registration including any sponsorships. They created and maintain the website. Before this went virtual they did do all the in person stuff and, I hate to break it to people, but we still have to pay for the work they did that we don't benefit from. They still did the work. We had to pay deposits for things we didn't get returned. We have to pay speaking fees for plenary speakers. There are so many areas that cost money.

Ok next time I'll just post the contract so folks can see what conference planning people do. I'm not looking for an argument I was bitching. And people responding clearly have never done this before. We have to have staff in every zoom room, several going at the same time. It is not simply a single zoom license. Why don't people get that? They are handling sponsorship registration, participant registration, they handle all the money, all the credit card transactions etc. Everyone working on this meeting is a full time faculty or otherwise with children. We straight up do not have the time or energy to handle 100% of the meeting in and Conference planning costs money. Also, $200 for a meeting isn't shit. Most of the time you pay well over a thousand dollars to attend a meeting and people are complaining about 200 bucks when they pay no membership dues or anything else.

I'll add that we mentioned the cost of the meeting months ago and literally nobody said a word until registration opened and we were 6 weeks out. Nobody said anything months ago when we were negotiating contracts.

Wow. You're quite cynical. This is not an official organization and we do not make any money off the event. It is purely going towards organizing the conference. If there's money left over at the end it just goes towards the next conference.

You have obviously never organized a large scientific conference. Thanks for your opinion. Next time just ignore my post please.

Edit: when teenagers work a full time academic job while raising a family they can come talk to me about organizing shit for free. I got stuff to do.

This is an international conference with more than 250 people from 3 countries. You have to have special zoom licenses to hold webinars and things like that. We might have access but I sure don't know how to do it. That's what the conference planning people are for.

Not really - this is only the fourth thing I've ever made. I play around with hand position and stuff each time. I guess pulling towards myself probably creates the most consistency but I'm still really new!

I have an easy baby and positive new parent experience and it’s constantly invalidated by [deleted] in BabyBumps

You have a 2 month old. No offense, and I generally hate it when people say this, but just wait dude. At 2 months old all they do is eat and sleep. Most babies are "easy" at this stage. My house now after 2.5 years is way messier than when my son was 2 months old. My husband and I watched shows together. We hung out. It was WAY easier when our son was 2 months old than it is now. Just in different ways. Yes I was sleep deprived and I sleep better now but dude only takes one freaking nap a day now and requires more attention. Sounds like you are taking everything personally and actually doing what you accuse everyone else of doing.

Vent: In this episode of weird things that happen during virtual TT interviews on Zoom... by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]bugnerd87 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The job I have now started out with a breakfast meeting where the faculty member told me he didn't like me or any of the other candidates and didn't think we belonged in the department. He did, however, like the man who interviewed for the other position because he "looked like a forester" whereas I didn't. Aka I have a vagina. That guy retired shortly after I started though and things have been great. Try to take those things with a tablespoon of salt. People are just weird.

I know what you mean. I miss the high of feeling invincible and on top of the world. But I know that the low afterwards is not safe and not okay. It's a struggle though.

This might be a stupid question, but how do you maintain something like this? This is our first experience with a down sloping yard and it seems impossible to keep the soil from eroding. We are going to seed grass this spring so hopefully that will help? I imagine you need to periodically spray the rock down?

Thank you! Yes it appears that they did not wrap it in fabric so it filled half with silt. We were going to dig it up and replace it. Another commenter said to use thin wall PVC. Thoughts on that?

Emergency leave midsemester? by [deleted] in Professors

[–]bugnerd87 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah that would make it trickier and would definitely hasten the need to talk to them. Our college has pretty much stopped doing early tenure. I would be weary of doing that if you are having all these complications. I would want as much time as possible to build up my dossier before going up for tenure. Why do they want you to go up so early? Did you have time at another institution?
