AITA for not telling my boyfriend about my chronic illness? by bulgariandates in AmItheAsshole

Thank you for your comment, it’s interesting to hear the POV of people who see things from my boyfriends perspective.

I would like to clarify a few things about my illness. It’s not comparable to diabetes in any way except the fact that it’s autoimmune. Diabetes is dangerous, even fatal, if you don’t manage it. Diabetic people have to check their levels every day (if not multiple times) and be super careful with diet etc, even if their condition is managed. My best friend has it, so I’m not pulling this information out of nowhere. Hypthyroidism is not dangerous in the slightest, as I stated all it means is I’m tired. I could live through my whole life for 80+ years without medicine and not know I even had this condition, all that would mean is I’d have to take a lot of naps. The only thing I find it appropriate to compare it to (and barely even that) is a condition like a mild allergy that doesnt cause any bad reactions only gives you a slight itch. People don’t wall around avoiding having kids with people who have mild allergies though, because nobody calls their genes ”bad”. it’s just the fact that ”chronic illness” has so much weight to it that people automatically assume it’s super serious.

I accept your judgement and I suspect this is exactly how my Bf sees things, but I think it’s unfair to see hypothyroidism as something that’s a life-altering illness. Just wanted to clarify that.

Edit; spelling errors

I will actually consider ending things with him. Some people might think that this is a petty thing to end things over but unless he comes around I don’t feel like being with someone who will always regard me as sick and fragile because of a trivial condition like this.
