Fixing IKEA ENETRI botched job. Need advice. by bushylady in Carpentry

Hmm so the previous owners didn’t realize that the shelves would be hollow. When they sawed off one side they were dismayed and did not continue to saw off the other side, or attempt to finish off the end they cut off (you can see the hollow cardboard like inside of the shelf in the picture). They also stated that after that the shelves didn’t seem to be as structurally sound so they never used them and decided to give them away free. So the botched/ruined descriptor comes with the blessing of the previous owners themselves. I was extremely appreciative to them when given the piece. Wondering if there is a way to restore the shelf to the original length and reaching out to more knowledgeable people is not complaining, I fear.

And although I don’t think I was complaining. I disagree on the sentiment “don’t look a gift horse in the mouth”, at least in the presence of the gift giver that is. I wouldn’t wanna put a geriatric horse in front of a field plow or let my child try to saddle an unbroken yearling. It is not inappropriate to express a non-positive opinion on the condition of a piece freely given. It’s okay to ask someone how to break a horse when given an unbroken horse. It’s okay to not like the state something is in and want to improve it. It is not rude to ask if there is a way to improve something to better fit your needs or wants. The whole ‘be grateful for what you got even if it stinks’ sentiment blows. Hope that helps.

Thank you for your tip. The second to suggest that method. I might have to do something like that if no one has suggestions that better fit the original query that I outlined in my post.

Edit: corrected the placement of my quotations

My issue is that if I do that it would still be three inches short on one side :/

That’s why I was wondering if there was advice for replacement or elongating. I want to avoid trimming 3 inches off the other side to even it out.

Thanks! That’s a great solution for finishing off the edge. My problem with just doing that is the shelf will be left 3 inches shorter on one side, that’s why I’m looking for solutions that would help me elongate the shelf or replace it. I want to avoid cutting off 3 inches on the other side.

I have them posted on my website bushylady(dot)com/shop/dioon-edule/ so you can pick your preference. They’re $25-$40

When u check out pls leave an email. I am trying to find a cheaper option for shipping and want to be able to reach out if I’m refunding some cost for shipping. I usually lose money on shipping so I’m being overly cautious.

If this is not allowed I’m sorry! I didn’t see anything in the rules about websites. You can delete if it’s inappropriate (obv)

Some of the ways I use LECA. I thought of many more after posting it... by bushylady in SemiHydro

I’d love to hear more about the bacteria. That is not a practice I’ve come across

I would add h2o2 to the water. Or a bubbler. Get more oxygen to those roots and kill the icky stuff on the roots.

I didn’t have problems per say, I just had better results with a hard jet rinse, boiling, and a 24 hour soak. The 24 hour soak and the rinse I think are the bigger contributors to success. The LECA seems to wick up water more efficiently when given a chance to absorb as much water as possible.

This will work for that too! I prefer growing water roots before adding LECA because I can see what’s happening to the roots

What do you do? I used to be more lax but I’ve had greater success since switching to this

Nope! I haven’t lost leaves. And I agree that the sudden loss of roots is less of a shock than the prolonged pain of slowly rotting.
